Missing Dr Who Story - Web of Fear found?????

Colleen Hawkins (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 6th September 2007, 11:40

Dr Who Online are reporting that the (mostly) missing Patrick Troughton story, The Web of Fear, has been found. I don`t think any Who fans should get too excited just yet, but it would be wonderful if it were true.

"Story" here.

Well, they`re not actually reporting that it HAS been found, just that it has been rumoured - best not to jump the gun!

Does seem that there is something in it though if they`ve chosen to report on a rumour. Has anyone at the Restoration Team site made comment? I can`t check it from work :(

Well, I think I made it clear that it was probably best not to get too excited just yet with the question marks in the heading and by saying:

(Not to mention the inverted commas around the word "story" in the link to Dr Who Online`s news page.)

I can`t see anything on the Restoration Team`s site. Is there anywhere else I should be looking?

From what I gather the thread on the RT forum has been locked... :/

I agree with you Colleen, it would be wonderful news if this was true!

This is what Mark Ayres of the Restoration Team had to say before locking the discussion thread:

At this point this is very much a rumour and I don`t think this forum is the place to discuss it. If and when we hear anything official, we`ll report it.

All I can say is that I, personally, have heard nothing.

Perhaps I should take this opportunity to reiterate that if anyone does have any information they should contact the BBC via the RT - we can immediately pass it on to those best-placed to deal with it. The email address is on our front page.

Thanks,

MArk.

So what are the Doctor Who episodes that are missing, and is there a team that go out and scours the earth for those missing episodes, or do the BBC wait till someone accidentally comes across one?

A little of column A and a little of column B. At present there are, IIRC, 108 episodes of Doctor Who missing. Aggravatingly because of the BBC wipe-and-destroy policy previous to 1978, partial stories as well as complete stories are missing. All of the missing stories are from the William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton eras, so if anybody spots an episode from that era, it is advisable to check the missing list over at the BBC`s Treasure Hunt. There are also Pertwee episodes held in black-and-white which the BBC would like to recover colour versions of.

There are people at the BBC who investigate missing episodes, but the BBC relies on goodwill much of the time to recover what is technically its property. Unfortunately the waters are sometimes muddied by hoaxers and well-meaning but overenthusiastic fans.

Bit late on this one (out all day being poked & prodded by a different sort of Doctor).

Episodes were wiped as stated by the BBC, at one point Ian Levine went into to talk to the BBC & found the very first Dalek story just about to to be wiped.

Episodes were destroyed\wiped to allow tape to be reused, the very first episode to be destroyed was The Feast of Steven, the mid Dalek Masterplan Christmas episode as its content was offensive to Muslim`s allegedly (& according to all reports even more excrutiatingly bad as the SOD U LOTT* conclusion).

Patrick Troughton sufered the most episodes to be lost, having only 8 complete stories at the last count. One of the last episodes to be found was Ep1 of Web.

Episode 1 of Pertwee`s The Invasion of the Dinosaurs was wiped in error as the first episode went out spoiler free entitled (The) Invasion (it now exists only in BW) & the BBC wiped it thinking it was Ep1 of Troughtons Cyberman story The Invasion (also missing but reconstructed as a animation by Cosgrove Hall along with Ep4).

The only way to get stories is to buy the audio dramas on tape\CD (home taping is saving Doctor Who), buy the complete stories as released or archive them on VHS from the early days of UK Gold (then go to transfer to DVD & find they won`t play back properly &\or rain water got into them during the summer monsoon`s) or get the complitation titles that pull together all the surviving clips & episodes aka Lost In Time collection of Hartnell & Troughton.

This would be great news if this turned up preferably complete or additional episodes.

It`s always nice to hear exclamations of horror when people hear that the BBC scrapped 108 episodes of Doctor Who, but the survival rate of that show is actually quite high in comparison with a lot of shows that would these days be regarded as classics. And it wasn`t just the BBC that wiped stuff. When Associated Rediffusion Television lost its franchise in the late 1960s, in a fit of pique, the MD of the company ordered the entire library holdings destroyed. Only a handful of stuff survives, bound up in red tape by the private equity firm current copyright holders who bought it as a tax writeoff.

Have a look at the BBC Treasure Hunt (link in my previous post) and Missing From The Archives if you really want to feel ill.
