<<My wicked idea - what do you think???!!!>>

Neil aka Neiliboy (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 4th December 2001, 22:43

I posted this on a previous thread but didnt really get a response so i`m posting it again:

Anyway i had what i thought was a brilliant idea regarding SKY `rob your pockets` Digital.

Here it is:

Instead of paying say £26 per month for a sky package that has loads of crappy extra channels that no-one wants (Challenge TV???) why dont subscribers pay say, £1 per month for each channel we wish to recieve, so if we only want 20 particular channels, we would pay £20 per month. A package of 10 movie channels could come to £5 per month or somet. voila!! Very simple i think.

Any channels that want to broadcast for free, are free to transmit to my digibox and i have the choice to watch them or not (just like it is at the moment).

If there needs to be a minimum amount of channels say 10 ( just for Sky to cover costs or whatever), then so be it. I cant really think of any negatives for this idea.

The main advantage of this idea is that it is truly `tailor made`.

Admitedly, Sky digital in my estimation is very good ( though not cheap), especially interactive services. I`m pretty certain the U.K must be number one in the world regarding digital TV (please correct me if i`m wrong).Oh yeah, and it definitley whoops NTL digital right in the ass...

What do you guys and gals reckon??!!

I agree with your idea`s, Sounds like a "Good Deal" But just like Everything else in the UK Petrol, Taxation, Electronic Goods Etc.... We always get shafted with excessive charges, In short we live in a Greedy country and everyone is out for there ponud of flesh! I wouldnt mind having Sky or ITV digital but I do have a problem paying the TV licence fee, Its a bitter pill as far as Im concerned... £109 for 5 s***ty channels plus the cost of your chosen Sky or ITV package, And that cost is yet Another Tax.

Im gonna stop now, Otherwise this tread will become a tax winge.

Or putting it into Sky terms - the TV licence costs £8.50 (ish) a month.

But that, of course, is for all the BBC channels - Knowledge, News etc., all the local radio stations, 5 National stations etc. And the one thing it doesn`t have that Sky does - Adverts. Do people enjoy having 44 minute shows that last for an hour - 25% of viewing time is adverts on Sky One.

And of course paying £400+ a year for Sky (plus the PPV events which are now getting even more expensive) is a great deal isn`t it ;-)

Id sooner have 25% of adverts on the BBC networks and loss the licence fee. £109 Is daylight robbery another tax you might say....

why not just live without television full stop? No licence fee, no adverts to sit through, no arguing over tv channels...more time to devote to other things. You can have a monitor/projector for your DVDs and as long as you don`t have a television tuner in the house, you`re legal too.

HaGGis!, please don`t start flaming here, it`s just opinion and Juan Pablo put an opinion forward. :-)

cheers,

Anil

This isn`t a flame..its a remark about common sense...

I`ve got Telewest Digital Cable...for which I pay 63.00 quid a month (thats for the complete package plus an extra box and film four)...for that i get 100 channels....

if we wasted our time with this "wicked idea" i`d have to pay an extra 37 pound a month for the same service....

it`s just a stupid idea and a stupid post...and if he has freedom of speech to come up with this , then i have freedom of speech to knock it...

oh..and one more thing.... merry xmas!..hehehheh

On the surface it does look like the license fee is a waste of money, most of what is on BBC1 and 2 is just pants. However, there are a small number of things worth watching (Have I Got News For You, Liquid News, etc) plus it has the best 24 hour news station, and then we have the free radio stations which are worth it for comedy shows such as I`m Sorry I Haven`t Got A Clue.

Channel 4 is excellent, and if push came to shove I`d rather pay for access to it and have no adverts than lose it. ITV is a shining example of all thats bad in the TV world, whilst Sky News is news broadcasting at its worst (even Channel 5 news is better) and Sky One is some good imported programming totally ruined by ad placement.

Well I just forked out a £109 for my TV licence yet 90% of whats on is s***! you know Smiley and big breasted garderners all that type of trash, but there`s stuff like Blue Planet and stuff on BBC2 that is worth the dosh alone Radio 4 & 5 get more of my attention then the TV. I`m Sorry I Haven`t Got A Clue just rips my guts out just brill. Sunday/Monday R4 .

Saterlite, put my own analog up and will do the same when I get a cheap second hand digi box offerd me, and then it will be mainly for the digital radio stations. subscribe to Sky never!

And has for adverts do they realy work?

That £109 licence fee ie JUST for BBC1 and BBC2 as they get the cash and not ITV (who CANNOT do a decent football show), CHANNEL 4 (l get E4 just to watch SOPRANOS!) and CHANNEL 5 (who show noting but cheap soft porn and direct-to-video films.) BBC hasn`t even got a worthwile football budget!

Give me adverts on BBC any day if l save £109!
