Help on getting team sponsorship???

The original 42pcenter MD (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 15th March 2007, 18:42

I know this is sort of sports related but it is more about the admin side of things.

The o/h is helping to set up a girls football team 7/13 years old. Never done anything like this and was wondering if any of you lot had tips for getting companys to sponsor them. Whats the best way to aproch them, (letter, e-mail, phone, on knees begging) what are the best sort of places to aproch. Muliti nationals (Boots, Virgin the like) who may have a budget for comunity projects or smaller local firms?

Are there any sites out there with the do`s and don`ts of setting up a kids team. Police checks for those involved, council funding, rules? All that sort of stuff.

Your help would be much apriciated.

For sponsorship I would approach local companies. Do some research, use the phone and quiz the receptionist - normally a goldmine of information. Try to determine who is responsible within the company, then you can write them a personalised letter. Don`t use email, too easily binned, impersonal, and it looks lazy.

Before seeking sponsorship you should establish a budget for the team`s needs and what benefits you are able to offer the sponsor (photo-ops, publicity, hoardings on match day etc.)

Yes go for local companies. Just set up a template letter on club headed paper if you have a crest etc and fire it out to as many local companies as possible, that`s what my amateur team does every season. We are lucky we have 8 companies that give us between £50 - £200 every year.

We also ask all the players to try and get a sponsor of their own and from a squad of 23 we got 10 back this season at £50 per pop so that was another £500 in the team funds. Obviously it would be much harder to ask for that froma 7-13 year old, in saying that I don`t know what the going rate for pocket money is these days. :D

Might be slightly different down south but up here in jock land a new rule was brought into amateur/kids football this year. If your club wants to signs anybody under the age of 16 then all the club officials i.e. Chairman, Secretary, Manager/Coach etc have to undertake a Disclosure Scotland check.

Thanks a lot. I shall pass on the advise, well apart from the bit about me sponsoring. I will be giving my time when needed though.

Having raced motorbikes for years,I know how hard it is to get sponsorship.
Unless you have the sales patter of a demon, you`ve little chance of getting money off people that aren`t directly affected by the team.
Believe me,I`ve seen boys try investing their money into promotional literature, videos and websites.
Even
They always end up getting sponsorship from people that would have sponsored them anyway (trade suppliers, friends, colleagues etc.)
I don`t mean to sound defeatest,I`m just telling it the way it is.
By all means try and get dosh off `cold` people, but aim for people you know first and don`t get disheartened when `cold` people give you the cold shoulder.

Tell her to find out what the girls` fathers do for a living, then approach them/their firms.
You may find out one of them owns his own firm,or is head of marketing for Marlboro !

Doc,

from my footballing years our junior side had sponsorship from a parents business. In the absence of such a lucky break definately start with "local companies" but it may be worth a little look around at the "bigger corporations" to see if they do have any sort of helpful handouts.

How about next time we see Kasabian in the pub we tap them up for a few hundred quid??

dont know if this helps on the sponsorship frnot but may be a useful link for all things admin when it comes to running these sorts of things (and dont forget all the CRB check sort of crap that may need to be done)

Thanks for that.

The area where the club will be based is not a cash rich area and I doubt any of the parents are loaded or have the know how to get where they work to dosh up. That`s why Sue is being drawn in to do all the paper work side of things.

Kasabian is a brilliant idea. Local lads, approachable, like their football, I have the bass players number (somewhere). Will wait till they are next p***ed and then tap them up.

How cool would that be. Being sponsored by a big "cool" band. Failing that I have Dave from Shawadywady`s number.
