With the gov about to announce the site for the UK`s first super casino, what are your thoughts. I have no problems with them. But this whole "it`s not about money it`s about regeneration" s***e they keep spouting. On five live they had a spokesman for a casino saying 99% of people that will go will not gamble and they will just use the other stuff, restraunts and the like, and that is where they will make their money. Bloke phones up. If blackpool does not get the licence, will you still build the resort with out the casino as you make your money from the restraunts?
I thought it was quite funny.

As someone who works in the gambling industry I am all for this "Super Casino"
I dont think that it will create problem gambers, because it is not exactly introducing anything new to us Brits. Gambling has been around for a number of years, betting shops, racecourses, scratchcards and the like. If someone has a problem with gambling, then it will come out in a number of different ways, not just in a bloody casino.
I have been to the Crown Casino in Melbourne, that is pretty much a Super Casino in its own right. Not once did I see any problems, as a matter of fact it was a genuinely lively and very social place to be.
Rags like the Star and the Sun will jump on a bandwagon, because thats what they do best. No doubt they will pay 16 and 17 year olds to try and get in and breach security to prove their flawed point.
This will give whatever location a huge tourist boost, will give the locals something to do and will be the epicentre of new business deals and corporate events.
My money is on the Dome by the way.....it gets announced at 11am
RE: Super casino.
Could it be anywhere but the dome?

Where do you get your info from Doc? Surely not Manchester? If so, then I revise my statement......yes it will breed gambling problems :D
RE: Super casino.
The announcement came through at 11:03. I did not think it was in the running. Dome or blackpool all the way. Someones pockets have been well lined who ever won.

Yep, BBCi says Manchester.
No offence to anyone who lives there, but I think that the ball has been well and truly dropped on this one. Hardly a tourist hotspot is it? Its not even popular in this country (stag weekends et al).
On a slightly unrelated, it is cheaper for me to get on the eurostar and spend a weekend in paris than it is to spend a weekend in blackpool. It mystifies me why people still go there. Its a skanky, overpriced toilet.

I stand by my statement
"Manchester would appoint an independent community trust to oversee its super-casino`s workings and promises the "highest standards of social responsibility".
The proposed site is a run-down area of east Manchester, which would see a £265m investment and create 2,700 direct and indirect jobs
The complex would also house an entertainment arena, a swimming pool, an urban sports venue, restaurants, bars, a nightclub and a hotel.
Opponents say the casino is likely to increase levels of problem gambling in an already deprived area."
Taking NTGs point: Yes it is cheaper to travel abroad than it is pretty much anywhere in this country.
I just cannot see Manchester making a success of this. They have stated it will be built in a deprived area.....if you were a punter and had it off in the casino, would you want to be walking through a deprived area with your winnings tucked away in your pocket? The only growth industry to come out this will be muggings methinks
Its fairly clear and rudimentary logic. Manchester are desperate for it and will administer the whole thing. If it goes belly up and is a disaster, well f*** it, its only Blackpool and London remains unscathed. If it is successful we can put one in the dome and ruin Blackpool again when people stop going there.
In this situation Blackpool is analogous to a Guinea Pig getting shampoo poured into its eyes.
