DVD Piracy Blurb - Superman Returns
Just got the Region 2 of this movie and inside the box there is a leaflet:
"By rejecting DVD piracy you`re helping us tackle it...You may remember the 21 illegal immagrants who tragically lost their lives whilst picking cockles in Morecombe Bay. Investigations by Lancashire Police led to the houses of the men responsible for their deaths. There they found over 4,000 countefeit DVDs and computers containing counterfeit material."
I know that this was a terrible thing to happen but FFS come on does that mean I`m gulity too as I`ve downloaded some of Series 3 of LOST or similar???
I would have thought these gang masters would have worked these poor sods to their deaths even if they didn`t have pirate DVDs at home!

RE: DVD Piracy Blurb - Superman Returns
Why is it they nevr take the common sense tack?
Hollywood is a business - films are an expensive investment and have to make their money back - a pirate DVD makes them no money - that film is then deemed less successful - don`t look for more work in the future from that director and so on, or any special editions etc.
I know all the major distributors seem to be `rolling in cash`, but particularly with smaller and more unusual films, a lack of DVD sales can sink careers, and stop that kind of film being made. Likewise, the time and effort put into a decent special edition DVD has to be paid back.
I just don`t do pirate DVDs, and I can`t see the appeal. Along with the quality issues, I guess it`s also a moral thing for me. OK, it`s not like stealing a car (another terrible FACT campaign), but you are stealing a whole lot of people`s hard work. It`s not like DVDs cost much these days...
(gets ready for backlash...)

No I agree, I would never buy a pirate DVD either. But this particular approach to guilting people is really offensive. Anti-piracy stuff in or on discs I have *paid* for p***es me off anyway.

I was just about to unleash a torrent of abuse and then it dawned on me that I`ve never actually bought a pirate DVD... I`ve downloaded countless films, games, TV shows etc. but never paid for them, so I can rest assured that I am not funding terrorism / drug dealers / cockle picking in seaside towns / baby eating :)
If a film is good, I will buy it (sometimes even twice)... it`s not my fault if they mainly churn out rubbish like Jackass or American Pie 15...
RE: DVD Piracy Blurb - Superman Returns
Yes xfg - I totally agree on that point. It`s insulting to audiences to ply us with those awful, awful FACT ads that we`ve all seen, that one with the guy and the branding iron springs to mind too - wtf?
What they need is a respected Hollywood type - actor, director, whatever, to simply come on and tell you why they belive Piracy/illegal downloading is wrong, and bad for the movie business and quality of movies as a whole.
If you want the multiplexes full of formula guaranteed money back blockbusters, then keep on piratin`...
