Is the scan player as bad as everyone says

dragonbb3 (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 19th October 2000, 21:48

I am relatively new to DVD as i have just bought a DVD player a couple of weeks and ago and already have 8 films. And after seeing how good this is i intend to build up a large collection of films (i never bothered with VHS)

Anyway i have purchased the Scan player and apart from the subtitle problem (whihc is being resolved) i have no problems with this and think it is an excellent player. Image quality is superb and aint as bad as everyone says. It plays region 1 DVD`s and mp3`s fine so what is everyones problem with this. I dont think it deserves as much as crap as everyone gives it

Actually, to Scan`s credit (where are you Nilesh?) they are sorting things out. Whether this means owners of the old skool Scans can get upgrades only Nilesh can tell you. I think the answer to your question is no...hopefully no-one`ll prove me wrong

A friend bought the Scan and we both loved it. It has good looks, solid build and I personally love the menu`s. The remote is the best I`ve come across on budget players too.

Unfortunately my friend had problems with his first machine: juddering during playback - and no this wasn`t NTSC>PAL conversion - he has an NTSC tv and he tried the player in every mode imaginable and on 2 other TV`s. Also both Scart sockets failed to work.

He recieved a replacement from Scan which solved the Scart problem but the judder is still there.

As he commented and I agree, the hassle of contacting them, arguing it out, sending back replacements and so forth just isn`t worth the hassle.

But then again it seems no player out there is free from flaws.

I`ve got the Daewoo DVD (from Argos) which I believe is the same model as the Scan.
Build quality is good, remote good too.
But I`ve noticed the judder on about 3 or 4 of the 20 DVDs I`ve watched since August.
It`s like the player is missing frames.
I have to stop the disk and restart and find the relevant chapter which is annoying.
This seems to cure the problem but it`s far from satisfactory.
