Thought it was 230v nowadays in the UK, though it was 240v when I was younger. I don`t think the differences between 220 & 240 will really make a differance as all items should have good tolerance levels.

My supply is 245V and it has caused the odd problem with my tv.
Also we are 50Hz (as in Germany) but with decent 3-pin plugs fitted to our machines.
Most DVD players these days utilise a universal 110-240V 50/60Hz power supply.
Make sure your DVD player has one too if Canada has a 60Hz supply.

UK supply is now rated at 230V AC.
And has been since the late 80`s to bring closer inline with europe.
But your local electricity supplier will tell you 230V AC with a tolarance
of + or - 10%.
eg.anything between 207V - 253V.
So I think you`ll be quite safe using a 220Vac appliance in the UK.
