Premium bond (big) winners: a ruse?

"V" (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 4th May 2006, 10:02

Just checked the £5000+ winners on the premium bonds last month and noticed that most of the winners were from the last 10 years or so. A ruse perhaps to encourage a purchase?

All i know about premium Bonds is:

When I was born my nan put £150 into a bank for me and bought me £150 of premium bonds, to help me through university (yeah, she was an optimist.....).

When I was 18 and came to cash in:

Bank: £150 x 18 years of interest equalled about 1200 quid

Premium Bonds: I won £50 quid once when I was 13. I used it to buy a pair of trainers.

I dont care what Alan Sugar says, you would be better off putting your money under your matress. At least you wouldnt have to fill in a load of forms to get at your cash, after you realised it was a waste of time.

So, in answer to your question, its no suprise that the winners are all from way back, because I dont know anyone who has one a decent bit of corn on them. It is a bit sneaky.

Afraid to say Nick your wrong. I`ve just had £750-00 in the last 3 months. If same money was in the bank I`d have about £25-00 interest. We started off with a £100-00 10 years ago & just built up with odds & ends, now we (on average) out do the bank interest by 10 to 1. Wouldn`t change it for anything. Mostly we win £50-00s sometimes £100-00s, the most we`ve won (in one go) is £500-00 about 9 years ago. One batch we got was a couple of numbers away from one of the million pound winners, drat blast etc.

I`ve been quite lucky with them recently as well :-)..so much so that I paid off my credit card with them in the end. Have to start again now though, but it was fun to see the `Congratulations, you have won` on the site :D..something I wn`t be seeing for a while I`m sure

I was wondering about Premium Bonds to put some of my overflow savings to use other than going into a taxable savings account when this year`s cash ISA allowance is full. I dunno though, the winnings would have to make up for the loss of interest, and obviously there`s no way it can be guarenteed.

I once won a £1000 a couple of years ago, but since then only the odd £50s or very rarely a £100 every so often.

overflow savings

Two words I`ve never heard from a student before :)

I`d say go for it - if it`s overflow savings then it could be argued you wouldn`t miss the interest anyway(?)...and then, you could win thousands!

Personally, in two years I`ve had £650 from a £5000 investment - a better return than any savings account surely?
