Woman banned from Sainsburys for eating a 5p sweet and not paying for it.

She picked up a pick and mix chocolate and scoffed it. She then went to the check out payed for the goods in her basket (not her belly) and left. She was stoped by security and handed a letter telling her she was not welcome at any of there stores. She went to the daily mail and they contacted Sainsburys who backed down and said sorry. She has not acsepted it and has said she will not shop there again. She could not believe with the amount she spends there that she could be treaded like that.

Sorry love, but it is theft. It is that simple.

I can`t help but think that if it was an asylum seeker doing a £10 shop, the Daily Mail would be calling for them to be deported insted of campaining for her rights.

All the best,

Dr 42%er.

It`s not easy being different. It`s not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....

Hell,I do that all the time.
If we take the wee one shopping, and she`s good,I`ll help myself to a chocolate mouse to reward her good behaviour.
If they want to cry about it,they can stuff their shop up their arse.

Technically yes,but it`s all about degrees.
I`m sure if,in a moment of madness, you were caught nicking a bag of crisps, you wouldn`t expect to be banged up for the same length of time as someone who steals £10million worth of stuff from the Bank of England, would you ?

Where would you stop, 5p sweet, 10p sweet, 30p beans, £2 ready meal, £7 joint of lamb £30 DVD player. If you want to reward your wee one then you reward her. Not let Sainsbury do it.

You, I imagine want the best for youy young un and for him/her to grow up a decent person. Is teaching them that they can take what they want, when they want the right way to do that?

So a chocolate mouse is okay...what about a packet of chewitts?

The judge/magistrate will decide of the degree of severity, but it`s still theft, no matter how petty it looks.
If everyone did it, there wouldn`t be very many chocolate mice left would there? :D

Neil.

I agree that it is theft, and i do think it`s wrong, however a lifetime ban for a 5p theft does seem a little excessive.

Now, maybe if someone approached her, asked her to pay and she steadfastly refused, then maybe she deserves a ban.

A sweet, which would be difficult to quantify in monetary terms as they are not sold singly,is my limit.
If my daughter wants anything bigger (juice or crisps) then we take the empty containers to the till and declare them.
To infer that anyone helping themselves to a sweetie is going to let things escalate into full on kleptomania is daft.

Petty is the keyword here.

I`d venture everyone on this site,at some point, has technically stolen something.
Whether it be helping yourself to a pen from work,or photocopying some stuff on the sly,it is technically theft, but I bet they`d be horrified to be called a thief.

Let`s keep things in perspective here.

It`s the fact that she has stood up and said she won`t exsept the apologie that gets my goat. You stole bitch. You should be saying sorry.

It's all about knowing the difference between right and wrong. Did she know she was in the wrong? I would like to think so. Regardless of it being a sweet or a DVD player she still stole knowing it was wrong. Maybe if punishment were the same per crime regardless of its severity people would think twice about petty crimes. The world could only be a better place surely?

I think Sainsburys had every right to do this, because it is, after all theft. However I dont think they were right to as its all about public image and I think if they had said `Oi, we saw that, next time pay for it` everyone would have been happy. Especially the PR people.

Personally speaking, I eat grapes at the supermarket, usually to see if they are worth buying. I know its theft but I dont actually give a s***.

And, yes, there is a `where do you stop` line ive drawn. If I cant eat it.
