TV. Weird looking pictures. Bad colour ?????
I have a Samsung 28" widescreen TV. Whenever I watch stuff on DVD and Digital broadcasts, if there is a scene where there are few colours, you can actually see the stepped changes in colour. For example if there was a scene in a film where a candle was shining light onto a wall, you should see on the wall the colour going smooth from yellow to black. Instead you` see on the wall the shades of colour look coarse going from yellow to black.
Has anyone seen this kind of thinfg before?

This effect is called "posterisation" and is noticeable on digital video which is poorly encoded, or where the bitrate is too low.
However, if it mainly happens with dark colours, try turning your TV`s brightness down - those colours may be below the "black" threshold and not meant to be seen! Turning down the contrast control may help, too. Also, the problem is often exacerbated by digital processing (usually found on expensive 100Hz sets) - if your TV has such a feature, try turning it off when watching material from a digital source.
If you haven`t already done so, it would be a good idea to get hold of a test DVD (such as Video Essentials) so you can calibrate your TV`s settings properly.

Mike,
Thanks for the advice. Do you know where I can get a test DVD?
Just something extra though. The "posterisation" effect happens as well as an annoying auto-brightness setting. When ever something bright appears on the screen the posterisation effecrt kicks in, where the colour levels of everything else on the screen become immediately darker. I`m quite sure this never use to happen before the new generation of Widescreen TVs.
