RGB Scart

After reading the DVD FAQ, it suggests that if using a player that outputs RGB (via Scart), then NTSC or PAL is irrelevant, i.e. if the player has an NTSC output for a Region 1 disc, but you have a PAL TV, this is not a problem as long as you are using an RGB connection. Is this correct?

Also, does the same apply to S-Video?

Whilst I think this is partially correct, I don`t think it is entirely. What it implies is that the PAL and NTSC colour space become irrelevant since everything is sent as individual component colours. But synching is still always going to be an issue, if your TV won`t sync to 60hz you won`t be able to see an NTSC picture.

How do I know if my TV takes a PAL 60 signal? I have an Orion 28" widescreen and the manual is useless. I have an RGB Scart socket - does this mean it takes PAL 60? If not, how can I find out whether it takes PAL 60 before I get a DVD player (I do not have one at the moment).

Unless you can find something that uses a 60hz signal then you wont be able to test it. I do know that you can set a Dreamcast to output video in 60hz, so if you know anyone with one, you could always borrow it and try it out.

Otherwise just look for a DVD player that can playback NTSC disc`s at 50hz.. the Samsung 709 does this (it calls it Pseudo-PAL) although I think it`s been discontinued now, most places still have stock.
