Tomato Ketchup in the fridge

SFBANKS (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 10th May 2005, 13:43

My mate was round at the weekend and pointed out that on the bottle of Tomato Kechup it says that it should be kept in the fridge after opening! :o

I have never noticed this before. Never done me any harm just keeping it my cupboard.

Where do you keep yours

Mines in the fridge - you never used to have to put it in the fridge so why are we supposed to now??

It`s a right pain putting freezing cold ketchup on hot chips or a bacon sarnie etc...

Same with jam and marmalade - why does that have to go in the fridge now...mmmmmm hot toast - cold jam, yuk!

why take life so seriously..its not like you are going to make it out alive

think ketchup is supposed to go in the fridge since they took the preservative out of it, not sure though. Mine`s in the fridge (next to the jam!)

It`s a sign of the litigious society we live in.
Covering their backsides,basically.

I`d never keep sauce or jam/marmalade in the fridge but, then again,I wouldn`t go crying for compensation if I got a touch of the trots.... :/ :¦

My red sauce ends up in whichevers closer after ive made a sarnie. If I finish the job with a Gherkin or summat then it usually ends up in the cupboard. If not the fridge. But as bowfer says, sauce, jam and the like never get fridged on purpose. Mainly because im lazy, but also because I dont think/care if it goes off.

But in all honesty I eat so much of the damn stuff theres usually a bottle just sat on the coffee table...

While were on the subject of tommy k, is it morally wrong to add a squirt when your making tuna mayonnaise? I find it gives it a bit of zip, but the mrs thinks im the antichrist for doing it.

nothing at all wrong with that!..although I tend to go for something a little stronger. Anyone tried `Dave`s Insanity Sauce`? That stuff should not just be kept in a fridge, it needs to be tied down somwehere.

Keep it in the kitchen cupboard personally.

THO being awkward keeps it in the fridge, she also panics 1 second after midnight & the "best before date" had expired. ;)

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

Lol. Mine too. I had to reassure her that food doesnt spotaniously self destruct or contract e-coli the second the sell by ticks over when i cooked her some 1 day over pasta a few days ago.

Use your common sense. If it niffs, throw it out. If it doesnt scoff it. When my auntie, who lives in the US, came over a few months ago she commented on how short the sell by dates are over here compared to the yanks food. Which, to be honest, makes me feel better that we have less crap added into it.

Oh, and for the record, steak isnt supposed to be bright red. Its always best on or over its sell by date.

many many moons ago i did a food & hygiene course, & one of the things i was told is that brown sauce is fine out of the fridge because of the spices & vinager, but as tomato sauce has no preservatives it should be kept in the fridge :) (tho my tommy sauce lives in the cupboard right next to the mustard & brown sauce ;) )
