Amazon minor error - moral dilemma (advice appreciated)

lard (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 5th March 2005, 10:36

Ok, I`d appreciate some advice on what to do with this.

I ordered a radio from Amazon early last month for my Dad`s birthday and it didn`t arrive within two weeks. I chased it up and Amazon realised there was a problem and sent me a replacement for free. Absolutely no charge at all. The replacement arrived in time for the old mans birthday and everyone was happy. Then (you know what`s coming) the original radio arrived in a somewhat bashed up box with `re-sealed by DHL` tape all over it. The radio box inside looks fine. The thing is, Amazon haven`t contacted me about it and they haven`t taken another payment for it. So, in effect, the radio I paid for has been delivered (all be it late and in a bashed box) and a radio we got for free from Amazon has also been delivered.

Both were signed for on the door so DHL know we received two boxes. Amazon know we were sent two radio`s. Maybe when they marry their records (do they actually DO this?) they`ll realise we have an extra radio.

In the mean time I could send Amazon an email saying `send me a postage paid label to return the extra radio or I keep it`. Or I could just keep quiet. What do you lot think? Are their any likely legal ramifications?

Cheers
Lard

Do the decent thing and let them know - chances are they`ll let you keep it anyway : they`ve probably already written it off.

I ordered the Buffy DVD Collection (32 disc thing) - it came to my works address within 3 days. I then took a week off work and when I came back there was another one waiting for me.

I left it a couple of weeks and checked that I hadn`t been charged again then sold it on e-bay for more than double the price (:¦ Oops take me away to prison and rot :D

Worried I might get caught? Caught doing what? I`ve done nothing wrong (so far).

Thanks for your replies. Pretty much as I expected really, some say send it back, some say keep it.

:)

It`s going to have to go back I reckon. Or at least give them the ultimatum as it were.

Yeah, asking them how to send it back (but keep your fingers crossed for them letting you keep it) is the right thing to do. :)

Unless you`re a scabby thief, like badboybez admitted to being >:( you should certainly send it back. Amazon`s loss will only be reflected in increased prices/poorer service in the future should eveyone turn a blind eye to problems of this nature.

Keeping it without alerting Amazon is stealing no less, no more.
