Magimix food processors - which size?

To all you home cooks/chefs out there......hubby and I are starting to be more adventurous with our cooking (had a little gift from his Mum at Christmas as she has just retired, so treated ourselves to nice new saucepans etc - if only the spending had stopped there!) - made a very nice Goan prawn curry last night with all the spices......anyway, we (well, it was his idea!) are now considering getting a food processor. Magimix seems to be the brand, but we`re just not decided on which size....the 3100 sounds perfectly adequate, the 4100 has a slightly larger capacity, while the 5100 is the golden wotsits. My husband thinks we should the get biggest one, as although we might not need it now, as we start to cook more we may possibly need it, and cos Delia says you should get the most powerful motor you can. Any thoughts anybody?
Thanks!

Magimix is the industry standard....but EXPENSIVE!!

Maybe a daft thing to say but you can get cheaper food processors with large motors!

If you are gonna spend a couple of hundred you need to be sure you are going to use it.....and not just leave it in the back of the cupboard with: The sandwich toaster, the bread machine, the George Foreman Grilling Machine etc etc :D:D:D:D:D:D

The 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California, less than 100 were made. My father spent 3 years restoring this car.....it is his love.....it is his passion....."it is his fault he didn`t lock the garage!"

I`ve had my Braun food processor for 20 years-somehow, like TVs, I don`t think today`s model will outlive it!
What will you use it for? Over the years I`ve mainly used mine for pastry(not my strong point) and finely choppped onions (when I remember I`ve got it). The other thing is blending soups.

I`ve found my cheapo hand-held mixer (7.99 Morrisons) does everything else like cake making and meringue beating.

Just bought a sandwhich press, however, and my cooking skills are no longer required ;)

If you`re just doing a small quantity of food for two people for one meal, then generally you can get away with a smallish food processor. The problem comes if you are cooking for larger numbers or batch cooking (I tend to have `cooking days` where I`ll prepare quantities for e.g. 20 and then freeze individual portions - saves standing over a stove every night if all I have to do is bung stuff in the oven). Then it`s definitely a case of the bigger the better. This especially applies if you`ve got a large quantity of stuff where the ingredients need blending in precise proportions and not all of it will go in the food processor at once.

Against this you`ve got to ask yourself how much you`re going to use the thing. I cook quite a lot and I rarely get out the food processor except for the blender attachment when making soup. I find that by the time I`ve got the thing out, found the right attachments and washed the thing up, I might just as well have used a knife/grater/whatever.

Don`t forget you`re still going to need a food mixer as well.

FWIW, I had a Moulinex food processor for about 20 years until the motor went phut, and then we bought a medium-sized Kenwood food processor/blender/grinder last year which so far has worked fine.
