Thousands Die In S.E & E Asia Tsunamis - Not one thread yet?

Neiliboy (Elite) posted this on Monday, 27th December 2004, 00:37

Its been on the news all day.

Thousands have died today in the shocking earthquake that rocked Asia and this was my first opportunity to discuss this with others. Quite frankly im appalled that no one has bothered to mention it on the forums until now - especially at this time of year when we should be thinking of others.

My best friend was in Sri Lanka on holiday and her hotel collapsed - her brother and sister were trapped in their room and her brother gashed his leg open. I called her this morning as i was really worried about her, and she was devastated, hopefully her and her family should be home by the 28th (she only flew out on the 24th)

My Mum and Dad are in Bangalore on holiday and i couldnt get through to them all day. I was sick with worry. My mum eventually called back and said she they were fine - in fact she had no idea what was going on. Its times like this where i really appreciate life.

This is a global disaster - bigger than 9/11. Had this happened anywhere closer to home im sure you`d have been concerned.

Anyway guys, please take a moment or two to think about the thousands of lives lost in todays massive tragedy - im sure the death tolls will be increasing so while you`re tucking into your leftover turkey sandwiches and legging it to the sales, please spare a thought for those on the other side of the world. .

Neil

Just read some other threads - seems like we`re more concerned about Monday`s post and x-mas pressies than the thousands that have died today..................what a shame. :/

I`m glad your family and friends are OK, Neiliboy.

Just because I haven`t commented about it here doesn`t mean I haven`t commented about it elsewhere, it doesn`t mean haven`t had the news on all day, it doesn`t mean I don`t care.

Most regulars probably haven`t even been here today to read, never mind contribute.

I actually was awake watching BBC News 24 (I tend to have news on in the background much of the day) when the newflash came through (just mentioning the 8.9 earthquake), the ticker mentioned Indonesia then Sri Lanka, then went back to mentioning the extent of damage in Sumatra, and I thought "They must have misheard Sumatra, it can`t be Sri Lanka that`s so far away from there"...

It`s absolutely tragic and horrifying what nature can do.

Well to be fair Neil, what do you want people to say about it? Don`t forget also it is boxing day too, some people were probably quite busy, maybe too busy to come online to reassure you that they care?

It is an absolutely horrific thing though, have an uncle who was due to go to f***et next week, thank you god, he wasn`t there this week. 12,000 apparently the death toll. Staggering.

Glad to hear you`re family were ok Neil.

Likewise Neiliboy & I havent seen any footage covering this tragedy as yet, mainly because I didnt get to hear about this until early afternoon in the pub, combined with the dearth of TV programming its been off or used for games, DVD`s etc, radio alarm has been turned off as a bad idea.

The relief agencies will get all the support they require from the usual (national & international) sources & the public appeals for aid will be met with the usual generosity of the British people.

Theres little I can add at this point as I still havent seen any footage or reports as yet, I can only hope that no-one here lost family or friends in this event.

Whats the point in re-hashing what`s already been plastered all over the news, maybe people have already commented on it in different places?

What depresses me is that the tabloids will probably make more of the tiny proportion of Brits amongst the dead than the tens of thousands of Indians, Sri Lankans, etc.

With due repect, Neil, even worse will be the undue attention paid to the various stories of the Brit survivors, many of whose worst problems will be a few bruises and lost property (insured), that will outweigh the entire communities of indigenous populations that have been wiped out. Cue assorted stories with `dream` `holiday` and `hell` in the headline. This doesn`t mean that we shouldn`t have sympathy for tourists caught in such situations, but sorry, it pales into total insigificance compared with the plight of the indigenous populations, who can`t of course fly away from the problem.

Morning all.

I`ve sobered up now - i was a bit p***ed off last night and very drunk as you can probably tell from the tone of my thread. Didnt mean to offend anyone :)

Anyway - Kang - I totally and utterly agree with what you said. Its so true the british press can be so shallow and crass. >:(
