Got my first Xmas present. :-D

sashenden (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 13th November 2004, 20:34

I always buy myself something that no one else could afford to buy at this time of year.
Just bought myself a Fusion freeview DVR. Thought about a DVD recorder, but didnt fancy having disks lying around waiting to be watched, and also wanted the freeview for the better picture quality and the like. So best of both worlds, with a 40GB harddisk. Can record one digital channel and watch another or record 2 digital channels and watch a recording. Also does 30 minute timeslips. Very fast menu system and easy to use. Only draw back I have found is that it uses DigiFusions own EPG which is downloaded overnight, so at the moment I dont have the 7 day EPG until tommorow morning.

So does anyone else buy themselves a present or is it just me?

Still wondering what the wife "is going to buy" me. I havent made up my mind yet\seen what I want yet. ;)

If Mac users are "more intelligent than the average computer user," why do they need an operating system designed for complete idiots?

Yeah, presents to yourself are always the best ones, my MX5 was my birthday present to myself last year!

What do you think of the Fusion? Being nosey, how much did you pay? And where from? I have been thinking about a freeview DVR, maybe the Humax 8000, now has an 80Gb drive for about £150, but is only a single tuner, though I dont know how often that would be a problem with the freeview channels...

I got it yesterday from Currys for £180. Walked in and asked the man if they had any. He went off out the back and came back , "Yes, we have 7". I then had to ask him to go back out and get me one because I wanted to buy it. Muppet.

One of the reasons I got a twin tuner was so I can say watch one digital channel and record the other, without having to go back to an analogue signal. Just because I can really. Having not had BBC3 or any other digital channels until now I dont suppose it would really be a problem if I only had a single tuner, but you never know.

It has 3 modes of compression. I havent tested them but the highest is supposed to give around 40 hours of storage. As it is I doubt I will ever really fill 20 hours. I normally record during the week, watch it on the weekend then record over. You can also output through Scart 2 and archive to VCR.

The only thing with it so far is that it uses thier own EPG. You have to leave it on standby so that the EPG is downloaded at 3am. Which I forgot to do last night so I still only have Now and Next data.

There isnt a card slot either if you wanted Topup TV. Having looked at the channels though nothing there I really wanted so not a problem for me.

You might wanna rethink how you think of your sales staff in future.
I`ve lost count of the amount of times I`ve checked physical stock for a customer, to bring it down, and then be told "oh, just wanted to know you had them in. I might be back later"
9/10 times because they`ve found someone willing to take an extra 50p off somewhere else, but only if the other Retailer "definitely has them in stock"

So who would be the muppet then?

Hmmmm not bad at £180, though I would probably want to change the hard drive to a larger one, though will need to check if that is possible.

Quick question though, when you say it downloads its own EPG is that off the air? Modem dial up? Network for broadband?

Cheers again, Tom

The EPG is downloaded over the air at about 3am every morning. Left mine on standby last night and this morning I had a full set of listings.

Hello,

this sounds like a top Xmas item for my parents, who currently only have 5 channels and a VCR...
Can someone mention how easy this is to use with the program guide etc. Particularly for short-sighted people!

thanks in advance

Well I am shortsighted with glasses, but 31 years old so I guess it might be different for your parents. I dont have any problems with the guide, but having seen my sisters freeview with the standard freeview EPG the fusion isnt as clear. More stuff is fitted onto the screen.Programming is a case of finding the program , pressing the green button to select it to record, and pressing green again to confirm. You dont need to put into any sort of timer mode like on a VCR. Between the green button presses you can edit the recording for start/end time and type of compression to use.

I was reading another forum which has threads specifically for this box. People have suggested that a better background wallpaper would make the EPG easier to read. Apparently the guys from Digifusion read that forum and have been known to respond with news of forthcoming updates or to answer queries.
