Can RCE (Regional Coding Enhanced) be defeated?

Spider (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 4th April 2001, 00:01

I have a chipped Sony DVP-S525D player that stops with the `regional screen of death` on my new Charlie`s Angel disc. Any ideas? If not, how do you defeat it on other players that might give me an idea how to?

Hi Spider,

For machines such as the Toshiba SD100E that also has the same problem as you, the following works:

Insert the disc and wait for the RCE screen to appear

Press `Memory` on the remote control

Enter title 01, chapter 00

Press Enter
This should play the film! To access the extras, just enter different title numbers

For most other machines where they can be set manually to R1 then they automatically defeat RCE, but if you can`t do that then have a play with the above procedure and see if you can make it work for your machine.

Cheers

Chris

According to DVDTalk`s piece on RCE, the Sony 525D should play RCE disks, which just goes to show how much *they* know, perhaps. On the other hand, it could be that Sony have issued a special model (hence the S) that catches RCE in spite of being chipped - which makes that a rather pointless exercise.

Mind you, I`m hardly surprised Sony machines freak out over RCE disks. RCE is mainly used by Columbia Tristar, and they`re owned by Sony.

It should play RCE discs *UNLESS* you`ve got an auto only mod as that is defeated by RCE (and then only if the mod did not involve a firmware swap).

You will need to get the player re-modded to include manual switching of regions.

try, first, playing a normal region 1 disk past the fbi warning - remove the disk and insert your region 1 rce coded disk.
works with my pioneer 717.
