Blockbuster DVD rentals
Does anyone know why the rental edition of movies don`t have the extras with them? I have just rented Fight Club and couldn`t see any of the extras montioned in this sites review.
A couple of things spring to mind. Fight Club is rental only in the UK at present. I can only assume the studio is trying to maximize rental income before you can buy it. Since you only rent for a night they probably think you don`t need the extras and they can save money by producing a cheaper disc. I`m sure it all comes down to money!
Rental is a way of squeezing more income out of a product, you pay to see it in the cinema, those who don`t will often pay to rent it out later. Then they`ll sell it to you with extra features all over again when it comes to buy it.
Basic economics really, money makes the world go round.
Of course this does question whether the UK DVD market is large enough to support rental windows (the time between releasing a rental and retail version of a title). Since one of the driving forces behind buying DVDs is to get things earlier than you would otherwise be able to.
Rental windows if implimented too early can damage DVD sales for this very reason, hence why studios such as Disney have been critisised for trying them out so soon.
There is a serious time issue with some of the special editions as well - for example, three versions of Terminator 2 plus all that extra material takes approx 9-10 hours to view - those who rent for one night can`t get through that much material - it`s more for collectors.
I doubt many who rent can even get through the director`s commentaries let alone multiple versions of the film!
Hi,
I bought a Region 2 version of Fight Club in Germany about 2 months ago - it had no extras, so I assume they came from the same `batch`...

This is always something to bear in mind when ordering other EU region 2 discs. Not all R2 discs have the same content, especially the multiple languages. As always check the specs before buying!
Or like me, you couldn`t care less about extra features and just buy em anyway.
I was on a school exchange, 15 quid sounded like a good buy ;)

Out of principle I am not renting DVD`s. The more sales of this type then more of the companies will put in rental windows delaying sell through releases
I know its cutting my nose off to spite my face but I don`t care
don`t rent, buy it from the states or amazon.com, it has 2 discs and full of extras !
