Region 2 better than Region 1 ?!?!?!?!

Moo.. (Elite) posted this on Monday, 5th March 2001, 14:58

i get the impression that too many people dismiss R2 dvds far too quickly. it seems that some just get R1 discs just `for the sake` of saying "i own/buy R1 discs". to say that all R1 discs are better than all R2 is ludicrous to say the least particularly as its a well known fact that PAL picture quality is superior to NTSC. ill admit that many films are released much sooner in the states than in europe and sometimes the R1 discs have better extras, although nowadays our extras are just as good as their R1 counterparts! but when films get a universal release ie, gladiator or when theres maybe a month or two between release dates ie, superman it seems silly not to get the R2 version.

I guess it is based on personal preferences as in some cases;

Cost, Availability, Content are 3 important factors which can sway most of us DVD enthusiasts to region 1.

Take for example : Leon - The Professional (Uncut International Version) whic i purchased 2 weeks ago, this is 2 hours and 13 minutes (approx) it is the uncut version and contains over 24 minutes of extra footage deemed too explicit for the American audience. compared to the UK version which is 1hr and 46 minutes (approx) and does`nt have as much extras.

But on the other hand, by the time some movies come out on region 2, bugs could be fixed, extra features added, etc.

I personally base my decision on a per DVD basis, as some are worth getting on Region 2, but some are a must- buy on region 1, a good example was Xmen, which i got on Region 1 in december and sometimes you do not want to wait 3-4 months for the region 2 release.

or take American Eyes Wide Shut complete with digital actors inserted in case you see something naughty, or Austin Powers with "pussy....cat" changed or the pause between the words removed...

they do stupid things to DVDs too, just different ones.
It just goes both ways, like me feelign silly for buying R1 Seven only a week or two before an identical R2 release which is gonna have the extra PAL resolution

swings and roundabouts

your best bet is to buy a good DVD magazine and let them review both formats which they do usally and then decide if the R1 version merits the extra cost to get it early, or the R2 version merits the extra wait to get the better quality, which isnt going to be a lot.

They are about the same but region 1 edge it with extras. Can u get criterion region 2 discs? i dont think so! Region 1 come out sooner and if you order from a good site, they are much cheaper. T2: UE is the best dvd but since r2 does not yet exist you cant compare it

Ahh but T2:UE is coming out here though, its just not out yet. When it does come out it will be exactly the same, only with the slightly better PAL resolution and so overall it is going to be a slightly better package.

This doesnt take cost into account of course, as you may be able to find it cheaper on R1. Maybe.

It all boils down to how patient you are, in my opinion.Yup.

Aye.

Not if the R1 version is better quality, has more features and is cheaper. In which case patience has nothing to do with it!

There is another advantage to region 2 that has not been mentioned...Computer Exchange will only deal in Region 2 (8-10 per disc on trade-in) - I use them like a lending library sometimes. Region 1 is much more difficult to sell/swap (unless anyone knows different).

I have found lots of cases where I have bought films which basically are not worth keeping - especially if you can trade them in. I now only buy films other than region 2 if I am pretty sure I would want to keep it and it has good extra features.

Of course sometimes Region 1 discs are so cheap that it is tempting.

A Good idea, which I use a lot is the DVD comparison websites that keep cropping up on the web, they compare and describe differences between region 1 & 2 discs :

All good points.

My point was just that if the disk has the same content then it is really about if you can be bothered waiting for it to be released on R2 or not. The R1 may also be cheaper, so you may want to buy them for that.

I am not going to get T2:UE R1 as I know it is coming out on R2. I am prepared to wait and I would prefer a R2 disc anyway, if possible.

The extra resolution is actually noticable and R2 is generally a safer bet, expecially if you have to play it on a PS2 or something. I dont, but it has happened before.

I go for R2 when I can.

Yupperoonies.
