What is a Philips CDi Player?

M. (Elite) posted this on Monday, 16th February 2004, 20:27

Thinking of buying a second hand double disc pack but it says it will only play on the above! Does this mean it definitely will not play on a PC or MP4 DVD Player or is this old baloney as the disc is now around 12 years old and technology has advanced a tinsy smidge i was thinking?

These haven`t been around for ages, but if i remember correctly phillips created the vcd (think it`s also called the white book standard ) don`t worry it should play in your dvd player if the player can handle vcd`s, and it will definatly work fine in the pc :)

I`ve got a number of CDi.s from a few years` back (eg James Bond triple box set) and they have always played fine on every DVD player and PC I`ve had.
Should play OK in dedicated VCD player too.

if i remember correctly there was a slight difference in the file structure for cd`i`s but i`m sure they play just like a normal vcd, GURU NEEDED TO CLARIFY :D

Ok thanks, sounds promising so far but i forgot to mention the seller/packaging says the following: "This disc is only playable in a philips cd-i player with digital video cartridge" does this make a difference at all???

Right, here`s a spanner in the works..........If it`s a video cd then yes,it will play on a pc/dvd player, but if it`s "digital video on cdi" then it won`t........I`ve still got a copy of Stings "10 summoners tales" on cdi & haven`t been able to play it on anything since :( (including my pc!) so Fat_Bob,this is what this sounds like to me......Hope this helps,Mark ;)

Anyone got one of these?

oddly enough the cdi was launched as a games platform and was originally shipped without the video cart, this was added at extra cost and without the video cart you could not play the vcd`s etc i have also dug out my old star trek cdi`s and they all play in my dvd player`s etc, the cdi could only read mpg 1 standard so even if it`s a wierd format you should be able to get the video file off and re-encode itusung nero or similar ;)

EDIT= GIVE US A LINK TO THE PRODUCT AND I SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL YOU FOR SURE :D

I`ve given all the details that are available at present I`m afraid, but it`s a music/video cd-i by "the Cure" called "Show" which also contains in addition "5 audio tracks that you can play on your CD player". :)

if it`s this, then i don`t think you will have any prob`s but just to be sure i am trying to find a picture of the cover`s then i`ll be certian :D

EDIT = found this asa well (love ebay :D ) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3386925617&category=2303

another edit=== righto i found the cover`s and i am now 99% sure that you will have no problem`s and it say`s phillips cdi player`s require a digital video cartridge the way it say`s it seems to imply that it works on other format`s, and the box look`s just like the cdi discs that i have and they play on anything :D
