Page 1 of High cost and Low Cost DVD players

For the past months people have downcast the benefits of purchasing a low budget DVD player.

The average person with a low budget, upgrades from the good old VHS format to budget DVD, which provides a great leap in video and audio quality. (More so than Sky Digital.)

Until DVD-R or DVD-RW what ever ( VHS vs Betamax) becomes the standard, and the price of recorders comes down, why spend hundreds of pounds on a DVD player ?

£20 to £25 for a commercial DVD film.
£15 for a commercial VHS tapes.
£3 for DVD rental and £1 for blank tape to record onto using cheap DVD player with macro vision removal.

Which one would you choose for the price?

Agreed, I wouldn`t pay £200+ for one when you consider the choice of budget players out there.

DVD all the time, you can`t zoom in on VHS, you can`t freeze frame on VHS without those nice lines in-between, you don`t get the same quality picture from VHS, you don`t get the same quality sound either. VHS quality degrades after a while.

DVD is bound to be more expensive than VHS, it`s new technology and therefore is above VHS, therefore it is not like comparing apples with apples !

This is my opinion would anybody else like to comment ?

Vern - I think you`ve got hold of the wrong end of the stick. What DaveyG is saying is why fork out shedloads of cash for a swanky corporate DVD with all the trimmings when you can get a budget one to tide you over and just use the VCR to tape `Coronation St` for the missus whilst you watch `X Men` etc on DVD.

I only really see my budget DVD player as a stopgap until DVD/R/RW or whatever settles down and plummets in price a little and then, and only then, will I go for a corporate name. Spending more than £200 on a DVD player does seem a bit wasteful at the moment when recordable DVD will eventually be at an affordable price. VCR will be like turntables in ten years time : rare (altho` I hear vinyl`s coming back !)
