Would you buy a cat D write off????

MarkMac (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 22nd December 2003, 07:49

The title really says it all-

If a car had been professionally repaired would you buy one? What are the implications other than resale value....?

Any experiences shared will be much appreciated...

A category D is a car that has been written off simply because it is uneconomical to repair it in the eyes of an insurer, so as long as any repairs have been done by a reputable garge there should be no mechanical difference between this and a car that hasn`t been written off.

When it comes to selling it, however, there could be a big difference in price. If you sell it privately, then it is up to you whether to be honest or not and tell them it was once a write off (and hope they don`t pay for one of those car history checks). If you trade it in, chances are the garage will do a check and if it comes back as an ex-write off they can drop the price they will pay significantly (my mate has his trade in price halfed when they found out it was ex-write off).

You pays your money...

MarkMac

It depends on the extent on how badly damaged the car was.

Light body panel damage ok but heavy impact forget it as even despite it been professionally repaired and the body chassis re-aligned you cannot guarantee how safe the car will be if it crashed again.

Also people are much wiser now and most would check the cars history so you may have problems selling it privately or being offer next to nothing if you trade it
