A new forums site for you to play with:

Now before you click, hopefully I can answer a number of questions before anyone asks them.

Firstly, this isn`t mean`t to be a desperate rip off of the DVD Forums. We`ve done this because the stats show there are a number of people who only use the forums and aren`t interested in the rest of the site, and that the majority of those are modem users for whom any less data to download is a bonus. It should be a quicker neater way for those people, and also anyone without a 17" monitor or greater.

Secondly it obviously lacks a small number of features that the main site has, these mainly being the New flags on each forum to see where new posts are. The reason is to try and cut down on database cpu usage to improve page view time.

Thirdly, it shares 98% of the same code as the main site, so when a new forum feature gets added to one it appears on the other, and vice versa. The whole thing is really just a proof of concept that all the code and site is as portable and flexible as it was designed to be.

Fourthly, and finally, this is the first (and by far the simplest) of a number of "Views" into the main site which will be appearing, the rest are a while off however and don`t ask what they are because I`m not going to tell you. :)

That`ll be me as I mainly only read the forums connect using a modem and have a 15 incher ;) .

I will have to add this one to my hotlinks , nice improvement from my point of view.

I was waiting for this to happen.

As the rest of the site seems to be updated once every vernal equinox, i always go straight to the forums (Even my bookmark takes me to the general forum).

true, i also only ever go to the forums, in fact the general forum is my homepage. (sad, moi) ;)

Neato! Here`s another bandwidth saving suggestion - what about a checkbox to allow the vistor to "view only new posts" - i.e. the thread list only shows threads with the "new" flag. When you go to the thread itself, the whole thing is shown, so it;s only on the list pages this happens.

I`m sorry to be the mardy-pants in the corner but it doesn`t seem to be much quicker to me & it seems more hassle to skip from forum to forum.
