Scan SC2000 Problems

Court (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 2nd August 2000, 15:53

Can some please help!

I am now on my second SC2000 within the space of a week. The first one sent back because of blocky and undetailed scenes on dark images. The replacement SC2000 still does the same thing.

I contacted Scan on Monday and told them of the problem. They said a few people had the same trouble and that they would phone me back after they had spoken to the manufactuer. However I did not here anything from them until I contacted them today. They are now telling me I need a firmware upgrade, which could take up to a month. What is a Firmware upgrade, and will I need to send the player back to Scan again?

Or should I get my money back and buy another player? What player would offer the same performance for the same price?

Your help is much apprecaited.

A firmware upgrade changes the `software` installed in the player`s circuits, as such an upgrade can improve the quality of a player, but only if the actual hardware already in it can make use of improved software. For the Scan I guess it would have to go back to them. (You`d have to sort out who pays).

I`m afraid I returned my SC-2000, although I`m still waiting for the money. I bought something else, it doesn`t play MP3, doesn`t have 2 SCART sockets, but the picture and sound are good - you need to decide what you actaully need. Try speaking to www.techtronics.com who I found can be very helpful if they`re not busy.

Hi Court,
I made the mistake of ordering my DVD player just before I read this post, and when it arrived and I hooked it up I found the same problem that you mention.

However, having contacted Scan today, they deny all knowledge of this particular bug, and of the firmware upgrade you mentioned!. Do you have any idea who you spoke to at Scan, so I can mention him by name if, when they get the player back, they claim it`s not defective...

Thanks,
Matt (djm[at]moc.ltg)

Did not actually get his name. The person who I did speak to claimed that it was a senior manager who said that the machine needed a firmware upgrade.

You say that they deny all knowledge of this bug, but on this website they say they have received an e-mail form Scan about the problem and are willing to replace the faulty machines in the middle of August.

I have spoken to Scan several times and each time I get a different story. Firstly they say they`ll call me back which they never do, when I call them they try to say it`s the compression of the player.

I think I might just send the player back for a refund!

Hi Court,
Where on this website to they admit to this?. I noticed an emailing commenting on the faulty composite output on some models, but have yet to see anything mentioning the firmware upgrade, or the pixelation on black images..

If you could post a link, or the thread, I`d be greatful.

(Note, according to Scan`s terms and conditions.. if you send it back and they declare the machine works perfectly.. if you want a refund you may have to pay a 25% restocking fee, and a £10 labour charge for them telling you there`s no bug... Hence me most trying to find something to back myself up with if they deny there`s a problem!).

Thanks,
Matt

I can`t actually find where I found it. But every time I have spoken to Scan they have said that the image should not look blocky or pixilated.

There is apparently someone at Scan called Nelley Raja who deals with the DVD players. One of the times I contacted Scan the person I spoke to said that Nelley Raja was on the phone to the manufacturer trying to sort out these problems.

Also look at the thread called Problems With Scan SC2000 posted by Rob Brady. On the second page of this thread there is an e-mail from Scan.
