So now that Kill Bill is playing everywhere... Spoilers
Who`s seen it?
I saw it this morning. Came out initially mixed whether I liked it or not, but then decided to buy the excellent soundtrack. Now, as with most soundtracks the songs bring back the visual memories and this is when I realised I love KILL BILL.
It is trash, no doubts there. The first real instance you know this is when The Bride arrives at the door of Vivica Fox`s character`s house. A quick zoom to the eyes of each woman and classic menacing music with high pitched vocals sets the mood for the rest of the film (well, the first half that is ;) ). But just because it`s trash, it doesn`t mean it is not an immense experience, because that is what Volume One is, a great cinematic experience. It`s easily one of the best films released this year and easily just as good as Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs (I like Jackie Brown, but it`s not 100% Tarantino).
Now, as most people know Tarantino has been influenced from many films, and some people feel he just outright rips other films off completely. I think that is unfair, after all film is all about being inspired and if the makers can`t be inspired then how can you expect the audience to be?
Kill Bill feels like an old Japanese movie at times, and it almost totally ditches the cool dialogue of Tarantino`s other films... but not quite. There are some appauling lines of dialogue, but in this film they work.
The only thing that annoyed me is the fight against the Crazy 88s. As mentioned in another thread, part of the fight is played in Black & White. Now we know this was because the MPAA wouldn`t give Kill Bill an R rating in America unless Tarantino did this, but you can tell it was a late decision. If it were meant to be in Black & White, they would have shot it in Black & White. It`s only for a short time period though, but because you`ve seen some of the footage before in colour in the trailers, it`s a bit off putting at first and is the only stylistic choice that sticks out as being a bad one.
But I loved the film and I`m going to see it again, probably at least a few times in the cinema :D

I read in few places on the net that he filmed it in black and white for artistic reasons.

It wasn`t filmed in black and white, it was filmed in colour, just check the trailer for proof of this. That is why it sticks out a bit. He would have got better results if he had shot it in black and white, or even chrome. But as it is it just jumps to black and white for no reason other than to tame down the bloodshed. Don`t worry, I think the Japanese version doesn`t have this problem ;)

:o :o :o SPOILERS BELOW :o :o :o
Good to have QT back on our screens - well worth the wait.
Even though the b&w sequence may have been an afterthought it seemed to work fairly well. The way it was lit gave it a feel that it should have been just as it was seen.
I particularly liked the anime section detailing the coming of age of O-Ren Ishii.
In fact quite a few different homages to be seen throughout this film.
I am going to give this a second viewing in a few days time - and when I do I want to check a possible continuity error. I`m sure that when The Bride and Vernita looked outside to see the school bus pull up the Pussy Wagon could not be seen; but it was parked in the same place later on. Hey, maybe I`m wrong!
Overall, this movie is just about what you would expect to see from Mr T. On first viewing I give it 8/10 - that will probably change after I see it again next week.

Ok, the black and white thing. It was filmed in colour of course, for the Japanese version. Though when Tarantino wrote the script he made note that it should turn to black and white - I think he was ahead of MPAA, realising what may happen. That is why Uma blinks to go in and out of black and white or you could say she was going into "the zone". Well, that is what I`ve read anyway.
Knew you`d like it Chewie, I`ve got the soundtrack, and there really is some lovely music on it. The end credit music is one of the most moving songs in film in my opinion, it makes me hairs stand on end when I play that track.
I think Moriarty summed it up on Aint It Cool News...

Is it an easy film to like, a film that will play for anybody? Nope. And that's exactly the way I like it.
Lots of people say to me; "what is it like then?" and I always say "Ahh I loved it, its great" but then always add "but that doesn`t mean you`ll like it". It is apparent that lots of people don`t like it, and I was perhaps a little bit naive to think they would (see my previous Kill Bill thread from a week ago) - but hell I thought it was great so I don`t really care anymore.
Like most people, the only thing I`m not sure if I did like was the black and white Crazy 88 fight. We need a Region 1/2 DVD of this in COLOUR!!!

I`m seeing this tomorrow. :D
Just so I know, exactly how long does the black and white last for (the whole fight? bit of the fight or just a few shots)?
RE: So now that Kill Bill is playing everywhere...
Most of the fight actually. Up until they change into the room where the light is turned off. You`ll know what I mean when u see it.

Just got back from seeing this, and thought it was great. Halfway through I wasn`t sure what to make of it as it was a total surprise what it was like, but the massacre was great, and although I didnt get many of the references (apart from fist of fury) and stuff i still thought it was enjoyable, though completely different to the other 3 QT films(which i love btw).
Some of the story and stuff reminded me of the crow with the whole revenge list type thing and coming back from the dead (well almost), as well as bits reminding me of the Shenmue games for anyone thats played them, just the japanese culture and stuff was reminiscent.
It was just a breath of fresh air to see something different at the cinema for a change that didn`t mind breaking rules (and being an 18!! :) )and being a change (although I agree some of the lines are awful) but it was cool, and I think i`ll like it more the next time I see it, roll on Vol2!
