Pikeys - What is the definition of them ?

Fitz (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 3rd September 2003, 14:00

Been wondering about this for a while because after reading through some of the threads, it seems that my definition of a "Pikey" might be wrong. I always thought Pikeys were part Romany. There would be the true Romany (Gypsy) then a half Romany was a Didicoy and a quarter Romany was a Pikey. All I know is that years ago when I belonged to a coarse fishing club in Kent, various members would complain about Pikeys getting to the lake and doing a bit of poaching etc. But as I said the term Pikey seems to encompass all sorts of undesirable people ? :/

Pikeys is a term widely used in todays society,

Whilst it can describe travelling folk, gypsys etc, you can also use the term to describe groups of yobs in hooded tops with baseball caps on, or even really scummy fake `Tommy` or `Ted Baker` wearing council estate scum.

I couldn`t think of anything witty.

I would agree Pikey would generally cover:

a) anyone living on a council estate
b) anyone who hangs out at the local dole office
c) anyone who I don`t like the look of
d) anyone who uses several swear words aimed at their own children and threaten to smack them in the face on a public bus if they dont stop crying.

These all cover also people who wear shell suits and fashion from a deifferent decade (thats not in fashion at the time)
I think you can always tell work shy pikey scum.
They tend to have very bad skin, either through smoking 60 a day or not taking care of themselves. Also examine oral hygine. They generally don`t have all teeth. Also badly kept hair, either geasy or badly dyed also.
Wear large 9ct rings and several thick chains
They also hang out at either Lidl or mostly can be found at theor local branch of ASDA shouting at frogmella and spudulika to stop climbing on the staff.

Pikey babies can be spotted a mile away too. Those who:
a) have mothers not yet old enough to take GCSEs
b) have their ears pierced before the age of 6 months.

I hate all pikeys and declare that now the summer is over (almost) that we instead of using our energies on combating wasps and spiders we now join together and support:
DRAP! (DVD Reviwers Against Pikeys)Who will join me?

Feel free to add your observations of pikeys too!

One shouldn`t generalise I suppose, but a lot of what you say rings true. My post town is Wrexham and there is a very big council estate there which was headline news recently with the riots. Having said that, there are some decent people living there and I feel sorry for them having to live there. However, one local councillor was castigated (no not castrated :D ) for voicing similar opions to the above, calling it "satellite city", which in essence was true. Practically every flat/house has the obligatory Sky minidish bolted to the wall or wherever. Some of the residents seem to be able to spend their income on widescreen TVs. digiboxes, fags, booze and the like, yet not spend it on giving their kids decent food and sending them down the "chippy" practically every other day. No wonder the current generation of pre-teenagers is so unhealthy.

I thought a pikey was just a derogatary slang term for a gypsy (or traveller or whatever you want to call them) who sponges off other people`s land, social security, property, etc.

This obviously makes it perfectly applicable to the little toerags that have mostly been pointed out above. :)

But far more interestingly, at least for me as I`ve just got me dictionary out, is that Pika is a tail-less hare of the order Rodentia. Yet Pikachu clearly has a tail...

...I`ll get my coat.

From http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pikey :

Quote:
Southern English word, derived from the slang for gypsie or diddicoy, used by the middle classes to denote a council tenant, usually young and male. A pikey has an inherent sense of style and trends are set on an annual basis. This year we see Burberry on the streets, largely in cap-form, but also filtering into ladies fashion, in the shape of the Burberry handbag. These Burberry items do not have to originals, ie they can be procured from the market, but discovery of this pikey version may lead to derision from the pikey`s peers.
Pikeys stick together, they share the same things in common - fathers, haircuts, accents and bad taste.

Pikey-spotting hints - look for excessive volumes of spittle and chewing gum on the ground, puddles of sick, large amounts of litter and fast food remains are also useful signifiers of pikey territory. To deal with pikeys takes nerve, but never show weakness. Like their Staffs, Pikeys can smell fear from a long way off.

I suppose this could be taken to be a fairly racist term, although I know it now has a much wider use.
