New bike for an eight year old...

David Banner (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 15th July 2003, 21:50

We picked out a kids 20" wheel "mountain" bike everything seemed fine, he rode like a maniac round the local playing field, then tried to brake. It has state of the art brakes, much better than mine, the front is a disk brake.

But the brake handles are designed for adults, they are three inches proud of the handlebars, I`m 6` 2" they are just right for me, he can`t reach them.

Now I have to go back to Halfords and reason with them...

My first "big" bike didn`t *have* brakes (and the handlbars used to jam). Oh my dad and "bargains"... :o)

(Never fell off it once though)

Maybe the bike is designed for a dwarf adult, rather than a kid? ;-)

What you should find is the brake leavers have a small screw on them the more you screw it in the closer the leaver moves towards the handle bar, set it up so your child can reach it then reset the breaks to suit simple when you know how!

Ah! as you say, simple when you know how, many thanks :)
It`s a pity Halfords couldn`t have set it up properly for him, or at least mention it might need doing/could be done, there`s nothing about it in the handbook.
Ta again,
Dave
