DO the BBFC listen to commentaries before certifying?
Just wondering if say "Bambi" was released on DVD with director`s commentary. Bambi would ordinarily be classified U. If however in the director`s commentary he said "I f***ing hated this scene, but the f***ing editor wouldn`t let me cut it the fat bastard!" Would this pass through or would this be picked up on?
I know it`s unlikely but hey....it could happen

Well, remember what happened to the Rocky DVD. It was recalled because there was an F-word used, and it was upped from a PG to a 12.
In a case like Bambi, Disney wouldn`t allow a commentary with bad language. And the director would know that anyway.
But the BBFC were caught out with Rocky, the stupid bastards. That`ll teach em` ta cut films ;-)

In fact the BBFC only listen to them if the distributor says the content may warrant a higher rating. The distributor makes the first call, so the BBFC don`t always listen to them...or at least they did last time I checked.

RE: DO the BBFC listen to commentaries before certifying?
I think they do. The BBFC is unbelievably anal about everything film-related, that`s why they even have to pass trailers. Look up Eraser on the website, there`s 3 different versions of the film they`ve classified. The original cut, the video release (which had loads of cuts, for some reason, bringing it down to a 15) and the TV edit, which sucks. The BBFC have integrated themselves into british law so much, that it`s impossible to release a film to the general public without them having a say in what`s acceptable.
Which is part of the reason so many people Import DVD`s from the US. I imported an extra-free version of face/off, purely for the reason "I don`t want anyone who doesn`t know me telling what I can and can`t watch"
I`m nearly 30, for flip`s sake, I don`t need out-of-touch prudes telling me a butterfly knife is offensive

Yeah, and I had to import AOTC from Oz because they deemed a head butt "influential", yet when a 20 year old massacres an entire village, they think "that`s ok". C***s. What really p***ed me off, is that in a TV advert for Jango Fett, they showed the frickin head butt, and this advert was shown on Cartoon Network in the afternoon, so all the kids would have already seen it.

I`m pretty sure a lot of them slip through the net. The only one that leaps to mind is Rob Cohen`s director`s commentary for that majestic masterpeice `XXX`, I recall he says f*** a couple of times but the disc was still rated 12. Still, not sure I can blame them for not sitting it out.

I didn`t import the Oz AOTC, I bought it when I was there last november (shameless Honemoon plug)
But the main question here has to be:
Has the BBFC Ever had a clue when it comes to the general concensus of the british people?
RE: DO the BBFC listen to commentaries before certifying?
There`s quite a few "12" films that contain the word f*** in them, so i don`t think the word was missed out by the BBFC, for some reason they find the word c*** offensive enough to up the certificate tho.
