Copy controlled cd`s question?

mikeyboy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 27th March 2003, 11:24

Has anyone had any problems playing certain cd`s marked on the front `copy controlled` ? I`ve just got the new bowie & mccartney albums and they both play ok apart from cutting out for about a second after reaching 9 seconds of each song! This happens on both of these albums. There`s no problems when playing them on my dvd player, but this problem happens on my personal cd player for some reason.
Any help is appreciated. cheers.

These `CDs` are bad news! I suggest you look at the following sites:

http://ukcdr.org/issues/cd/
http://www.fatchucks.com/z3.cd.html

Basically, these discs are *not* compliant with the Red Book specification for CD audio, and therefore they can`t really be called CDs. The manufacturers bend the rules to make the discs more difficult to `rip` on PC CD-ROM drives, but of course this makes them unplayable on many standalone players too.

The `missing second` on each track is probably a section of audio that has been deliberately f*cked up in order to confuse CD ripping programs.

If you`re unhappy with the situation, take them back and demand a refund. If the record companies are allowed to get away with this, we could end up seeing a lot more of this kind of thing.

Thanks a lot for your help mike. had an idea the reason may have been something like that. These 2 cd`s are both on the EMI label, so looks like it`s something that that label will be doing from now on! you`re right, it`s not on.I want to keep these cd`s (i take it these 2 albums will have all been manufactured the same?, so no point in exchanging), i`ll just have to play them on my dvd/cd player. thanks again.

Take the CD's back and download all the tracks from EDITED BY MODERATOR ! That'll learn em!

(please note: that was a 'joke')

I`ve just bought the new Melanie C album from cd-wow and it`s copy controlled. Had a look at it in Tesco`s and there was no mention of it being copy controlled. Is it just on imports?

"Is it just on imports?"

Depends. It seems that some discs are protected in the UK but not elsewhere, whereas with others the reverse is true. If you look at the sites I linked above, they give lists of protected and non-protected titles.
