Processor upgrade: Advice sorely needed!
I have recently upgraded my computer. I stuck in a new ti4200, a new 350 PSU and a duron 1.3ghz cpu.
The POST recognises the chip as 50mhz athlon, or something crazy like that. But it boots just fine into windows (Win98se) and sisoft sandra recognises it as a 1.3ghz athlon. I have a Jetway 663AS mobo, which is knocking on a bit. The manual says it supported athlons up to 1.3 ghz and durons up to 800mhz. It came out when these speeds were cutting edge, but I thought I would give it a whirl.
I have used the system sparingly so as not to tempt fate, but everything seemed to work ok. I havent tried any serious 3d gaming incase of a meltdown, but Msoffice stuff and the internet seem quite happy.
The question is: can I continue on my merry way using the duron chip even though windows recognises it as an athlon (without causing anything permanent damage) or will I have to go through the hair raising experience of [dum dum DUM!!!] flashing my BIOS (which I have never done before and, quite frankly, the thought terrifies me).
Help me jeebus!

Hi
While i have not had anything to do with the brand Jetway my Iwill motherboard also would say Athlon when a duron was fitted after the first setup screen [ either jumper set or auto detect ] Either would get the speed right then you save the setting.
I have now changed to a Athlon and while its faster it seems to make a good job of running the machine as did the Duron just better video. [ more frames ]
Hope this helps.

So youre saying that it doesnt matter if the duron is recognised as an athlon? I will get the speed increase over my old duron 600 and everything will work fine?
RE: Processor upgrade: Advice sorely needed!
Don`t worry - everything will work fine.
The only slight snag is that the BIOS might not set up the processor to use SSE instructions (older Athlons and Durons didn`t have them, you see), so you might get a slight performance hit in applications which use these instructions (compared to a system which does have SSE enabled). It`s probably not worth worrying about, though.
