Independance Day extras suck?

RJS (undefined) posted this on Friday, 7th July 2000, 11:45

A couple of days ago I sat down to watch Independance Day and thoroughly enjoyed the excellent video and fab sound. Then I slapped in the disc 2 and apart from the alternate ending was shocked at the low quality of extras. The three making of`s seemed to share all the same footage and mostly consist of those irritating interviews with the actors who go on about how great the film is, etc.

Then last night I slap in End of Days, the acting from Schwarzenneger (scuse the spelling) was diabolical, and although the effects were good clearly not as expensive as ID4, but the sound was fab. However the extras were much better and far more of an insight into how they did the special effects.

Am I being cynical in thinking they could have easily made ID4 a single disc set and that the 2nd disc idea is just a marketing ploy? Sure the menus are nice but disc 2 spent barely 20 minutes in my drive it was so dull.

Isn`t there a rule about the quality/quantity of the extras being inversely proportional to the quality of the film? :-)

Actually, scratch that, I thought ID4 was diabolical when I saw it in the cinema. Plot was utterly crap, stupid, unoriginal, brainless, unrealistic (the computer virus, PER-LEESE!). Average special effects (IMO they were nothing special, nothing new (I thought the fx in TPM were pretty boring, too... Whoopee we can do full-screen CGI now... Give me a break!)...

Only good bit is Will Smith punching the Alien and saying "Welcome to Earth".

There ya go, that`s my review. :-)

A lot of people liked it, though, so maybe I was expecting too much? I didn`t see it expecting an intelligent film but I did expect a decent action movie and felt pretty left down...
