Heresy or ?

I may be on my own on this but I`m always amazed at the importance attached to the extras on dvd`s.
Sure, If you`re a serious film buff or doing a degree in media/cinema studies, you want to know how the special effects were made or how the stunts were done and the music composed.
Knowing about the mechanics of the film destroys the illusion and lessens my overall enjoyment.
Over everything else I want my films to be of the highest possible visual quality and the best sound reproduction my system is capable of.
The closest allegory I can offer is enjoying a good book, then having a further two chapters of explanation about plot invention, paragraph layout, grammar and punctuation.

Not sure about this. Making films is an art form. Knowing more about how this is all put together can only make you appreciate it more can`t it? There`s no rules that say you have to watch the extras, but I wish there were more documentaries on subjects such as the soundtrack, camerwork, editing etc.
Having said that, many of the so called extras are so mind-numbingly simplistic it`s not worth putting them on the DVD in the first place, such as the laughable `making of` featurettes that last for no longer than 10 minutes and tell you what you already know as you`ve just seen the film.

I have to admit to hardly ever watching any extras. I agree that the making of featurettes are naff! Nothing more than glorified adverts that are shown on TV to get extra bums on seats in cinemas during the initial release.

Mainly, the only extras I always watch are the bloopers/outtakes.
