Where can I buy an Athlon or T-bird 1.2GHz cpu from?

Bubblegum (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 28th September 2002, 08:30

I have tried jungle, and the lowest speed that they have is a 1.6.
I want to upgrade my processor, and the max that it will take is a 1.2GHZ Athlon or T-bird.
I have found people selling them on Ebay second hand, but I would prefer it to be brand new.
Also, where can I get a cheapish stick of 256MB SDRAM?

Cheers for the info

You`ll have a hard job finding a 1.2GHz Athlon (except second hand) as it`s been discontinued.

However, if your board will take a 1.2GHz Athlon, it`ll probably take a 1.2GHz Duron (possibly with the help of a BIOS upgrade). Check your board maker`s website for the latest BIOS and the list of CPUs it supports. You may even be able to use a 1.6 or higher Athlon.

I was going to suggest the same. I had an old Abit KT7 board (100Mhz), and a 1.2 Duron works nicely in it. http://www.ebuyer.com is cheap for SDRAM at the moment - you`ll get the Duron there too.

Cheers guys!
Is there software that I can use to identify my motherboard?
Also is the BIOS update you speak of merely a software update?

"Is there software that I can use to identify my motherboard?"
When you boot up, you should see some info appear before Windows or whatever starts doing it`s thing. Board manufacturer and model should display, along with the BIOS version. I`d write doen as much as you can from that, and then have a search on the web for more info.

"Also is the BIOS update you speak of merely a software update?"
Not quite - it`s an update to what`s generally called "firmware" (i.e. it remains on the chip even when powered off) on one of the chips on the board. You need to run a utility that "flashes" the BIOS with the new firmware. Without wanting to alarm you, if it goes wrong, you may kill your mobo. You need to be very certain of the board`s model before doing it!!!

Identify your motherboard (plus lots of other stuff) with

http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/san_dem/html/dload.htm

Lots of boards can take more than the "stated" maximum.

If your max IS 1.2ghz then you`d be better off buying a new mobo/cpu or you`ll only be p*ssed off in a few months when your 1.2ghz is choking!

Get the Elite K7S5A for £45 (not the fastest board in the world but it takes sdr or ddr ram upto 1Gb, can run the new 2200+ chips and i own one so i can`t fault it!) http://www.aria.co.uk/DisplayProducts.asp?Category=46&page=2&orderby=

Then you can pick up a cheap amd cpu from here http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/kl.asp?AvdID=1&CatID=4&GrpID=6&t=795&l=2
(xp1600+ cpu @ 1.4ghz for £44

Fantastic upgrade for under a hundred quid!

If you do decide to go the upgrade route, try http://www.ebuyer.com - they`re cheaper for that ECS board - nice board for the money - I`ve put a couple in systems, plus also the K7S6A (but no SDR ram support on that, IIRC, so go for the K7S5A and keep your existing memory).

Ebuyer are cheaper on delivery - free if over £100 ex VAT, too. However, make sure all the things are in stock when you order, as they only ship when they have all the bits.

PS - You`d need a new CPU cooler, too!!
