I`m trying to connect to the internet from a lap top, but keep getting the above message. I`ve checked the hardware settings for the modem - all`s well there and a different cable to no avail. Any suggestions?

have you got call minder or bt answer 1571?
if so and someone`s left you a message, your modem won`t like the warbling dial tone - you can simply tell it not to wait for dial tone.

i had same trouble at wall connecter but i`m using a phone double adapter.if i push phone socket right in i don`t get a dial tone but if i pull it out slightly(yes i`m still talking about phone socket)all is well.you can but try.

in the modem/connection options there is an option to `wait for dial tone` uncheck this and everything should be o.k.

BT 1571 was the culprit - funny, even when they give u something for nothing (questionable) it gives u grief!
