Have a look in Yellow Pages (or http://www.yell.com) - I found a great shop near us through them that was cheaper than Halfords - near Harlow - if you live in Herts/Essex I`ll dig out the details if you need them.

Either Lidl or Aldi were/are doing one about now. I think it was about £170-00

Some very good deals on some good bikes. IMHO, it`s worth spending a bit more on a bike, because you`ll get better quality components that way. For 200-250, you`ll get something pretty smart. Try and get one with an aluminium frame, as these are lighter than steel, and so are easier to ride. My dad recently got himself a nice Claud Butler for £199, which I think is the cheapest aluminium framed bike on sale in the UK. In my experience, (and opinion) it`s worth reading some of the specialised bike press to get yourself familiarised with what are the better brands to go for. I`d strongly recommend avoiding the cheaper end of the market, like the Aldi/Lidl bikes, or the ones stocked by Argos or other `mainstream` retailers - heavy steel frames, lower-quality components, etc.

It`s also worth picking up and reading something like MBUK or What Mountain Bike. They often have review of the low end (sub £400) bikes and you`d be surprised at the difference between some of `em.

If you`re after something a little more juicy I can recommend a Ellsworth Isis from Freeborn in Horsham. Rides like a dream, but then you`d expect it too for £2,000! I`m very happy with my new one though :D

Giz,

Wow, that`s only about 10 times what my Raleigh Lizard cost back in 1990 ;-)

Seriously, don`t you worry about security with a bike like that? You`d need a pretty hefty "D" to keep the thieves at bay.

Yeah - I don`t leave it anywhere. Far too risky.

Even just convincing the insurance company that you`ve actually spent that much on bike is an effort!! Still - works out cheep if you compare it to the sort of money golf clubs charge for a years membership.....
