Wharfedale 750s - worth getting?????

steveFTM (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 30th November 2000, 01:31

Ive read loads about the wharfedale 750s and after seeing the price was well impressed. However being new to this whole idea of dvds i was wondering whether there are any real problems encountered with the hacks used. I read about a few on here but it appears that there is always a solution. If there is any real problems encountered could someone tell me.
Essentially what i want to know is whether it is actually worth getting this dvd or getting a different one (one of similar value). Also what type of region are people encounting problems with and which ones seem OK (or is this purely down to different machines.

Cheers in advance.

Hi Steve,

In terms of hacks and FAQs for the various Wharfedales out there check out:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/wharfedale.html

I have the latest 750S and a colleague has the 750S with the previous firmware to mine. We`re both very pleased with quality of sound and picture. Both are hackable to a single region and multi-region, and both manage to defeat RCE on `The Patriot` in multi-region mode.

We`ve encountered a couple of niggles with R2 disks such as Stigmata and Sixth Sense, but so far encountered no problems with R1 disks.

On previous machines I saw varying degrees of lip sync issues especicially with DTS tracks however the same disks play perfectly in the 750S.

I would certainly be happy to recommend it on my findings to date.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Chris

I just got the 750s myself and would recommend it. Only niggle is the loudness of the drive, but if u put it in a glass fronted cab. its fine. Make sure u don`t pick up a 750 by mistake as some Tescos have them sitting in the same stack. I had a 750 before but took it back and changed it to the 750s. On the 750s there are a lot more extras than on the 750. ie 7 rates of slowmo, 4 speeds of rw and ff, better osd and better zoom mode. It can also play mp3 and has not failed to play any disc that I own, both R1 and R2.

What were the niggles on Stigmata & 6th Sense on the 750s ?
Please do tell . . . . they play okay on a Region Hacked 750.
