Who else is glad the Irish have lost?

top_cat_38 (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 16th June 2002, 18:43

I know I`m in a small minority but I`m glad the Irish have gone out.

They never looked like scoring today and I can`t remember a single save (apart from the penalty) the Spanish goalkeeper had to make.

The Spanish were far superior man-for-man, you can not win games just by running around a lot, you need some level of skill and the Irish just don`t have it I`m afraid.

Sorry but "the truth always hurts" !

The minority is growing, I was very happy to the Irish go out as well. Personally I can`t see what all the fuss is over this mob. The TV, The papers and the radio have gone completely over the top concerning this FOREIGN team. They have nothing to do with England or any part of the United Kingdom come to that.

Why hasn`t the same coverage ( and falling over backwards to praise them ) been given to other foreign teams such as Italy or Mexico?

Without Scotland or the other minor nations of the UK involved, l guess the BBC and ITV need to fill up some time.

l was not bothered either way if lreland lost or not, but l wouldn`t go as far as saying l`m glad they went out.

I was interested in how well they do because of how many of the players play in the English league, and how well they would do without Keane.

At least lrish fans now know how English fans feel about going out on penalties.

Did you actually watch the match, Ireland were all over Spain in the second half. Spain did nothing for last half hour and were holding on for penalties. Also are you trying to say Robbie Keane and Damien Duff aren`t skillful players.
I was happy to see Ireland and England do well, and my opinion is pretty unbiased as I`m a Northern Ireland fan.

Not sure what match you lot were watching, but looking at the match stats (which you obviously did not), some comments suggesting the match was one-sided, are total guff.

I`m neither English or Irish (I`m Welsh), but being `glad` that a team is knocked out seems a little petty. (I`m glad the Frogs are out though, tee hee)

Key Stats.... Esp Ire
Goals 1 1
Penalty shoot-out 3 2
Shots on goal 11 18
Shots on target 6 6
Fouls committed 19 23
Corner kicks 5 6
Penalty kicks 0 2
Caught offside 13 1 (Naive ! World class strikers ??)
Yellow cards 3 0

They played well I thought.

Neil.

All over them in what sense? They just hoofed the ball up-field to Quinn who then promptly gave it away. Ireland never looked like getting a second goal and I think both teams were happy to settle for penalties in the end.

David O`Leary said "They (Ireland) played magnificently and just needed a little bit more luck to go through."

Why do people always blame bad (or the lack of) luck when talking about Ireland? It just hides the fact that they`re not very good and the sooner people realise it the better for all concerned.

The reason we hear so much about them is because most of them are English anyway.

Mark Lawrenson wrote about England yesterday "we can win this", this is the same person who played for Ireland. Talk about identity crisis!

How the non-Irish players can wear the shirt with pride is beyond me.

Anyway, I`ve said enough....

Owen .....sounds Welsh to me???
