Interesting tactic, widely reported in the press today. GameCube is out a few weeks later so the pricing is quite interesting, though not interesting enough for me to steer away from GC.

Sounds like a very desperate move to me. l hear they were not making any profit on X Box machines, just the softwear, but this price drop would mean Microsoft now making a heavy loss!

That`s no big deal in itself, console manufacturers always make a heavy loss on hardware. I think Microsoft have been unpleasantly surprised by the lukewarm response to the XBox and are trying to rectify the situation before the GameCube arrives.

They`ve been somewhat naive, in my opinion. £300 is not a "mass market" price point for a games console, no matter how you dress it up. Especially when the competition is selling for at least £100 less.

Or, infact just not fleecing us quite so much - $299 in the US £299 here, were we supposed to subsidise the US?

And I think that "selling at a loss" thing is an urban myth, maybe with R&D costs you could claim a "loss" until your profits from sales pass the R&D cost.

It`s definately at the price point now it should have been at when it launched, and it will ceratinly help - but Sony, I think, have it wrapped up, at least for the near future.

Hoping for Fifa to be added to the list for some footie action amidst world cup fever.

Has anyone actually looked properly at the gamecube btw? Games r sposed to be rubbish and the gfx remind me of an N64 with the hi-res expansion pack but r still far worse than even the Dreamcast for instance which costs £30 instead.

How anyone can choose a PS2 or a gamecube now over the magnificent X-box is beyond me. Outclasses in every way.
