Alternative to Football Manager?

Bezzawezza (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 30th March 2010, 12:27

The only game I ever play on PC is Football Manager but I have started to tire of this of late and fancy something different. I`m not interested in playing FPS games or anything involving a control pad as I have the PS3 for that caper. I would just like an open ended game like Football Manager is which can be controlled by mouse or keyboard.
Anyone got any ideas?

Championship Manager took a year off to get a game out to compete with Football Manager, resulting in CM 2010.

Personally I think it`s a step down from FM, but plenty of others think the opposite.

Whatever the last SimCity was? Or The Sims? Or how about giving an RTS a go? Something online only like World of Warcraft? However that really is the worlds biggest time sink.

I agree with you on Championship Manager. I took "advantage" of the pre-order for £2.99 offer they did and consider it £2.99 that would have been better spent on alcohol.
Civilisation may be a good shout though

Maybe you should give yourself a challenge on FM? Start as a lower-league team? Start without a job? Manage an international side?

On the Football Manager forums (at sigames.com), there are people who have uploaded their save games and set challenges to achieve when playing them.

You should give Fifa Manager 10 a go, I was always a FM fan but Fifa is pretty good compared to the previous s***e they turned out.

Civilzation IV good then?

I used to love Civilization 2 on the PC but never played one since.  I used to like stuff like the WW2 scenario where you jumped straight in.

Would it run on a Netbook that can run Football Manager 2010, or is it quiet graphics heavy nowdays?

I`ve got 2GB of RAM on my NC10.

Yep done most of those. Taken Leeds back to the Champions League (mostly thanks to Ken Bates selling the club to a sugar daddy) whilst also guiding Cameroon to African Nations glory. I was then offered the England job, which when I am Welsh was probably a mistake on behalf of the FA as I immediately installed Titus Bramble as the England captain (who was quite old by now) and insisted on playing Rooney in goal. I was soon fired after the 7-0 battering by Sweden. :D

Official specs for Civ IV say: 1.2 GHz Processor , 256 MB RAM , 64 MB video card Hardware T&L , sound card , 1.7 GB HDD

It`s only £8 on Amzon (that`s the pack I got with the two expansions that I don`t know what they do): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-IV-Complete/dp/B000W2FICG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1270024381&sr=8-1&tag=myrev09-21
