Wii Internet Connection Problems

kennedy316 (Elite) posted this on Friday, 22nd June 2007, 18:10

I dont have the greatest set up in the world as im not the much of a tech head but was wondering if anyone could advise me on a problem im having with my new Wii.

I have a broadband connection where the modem is plugged into my pc via a usb port i then have an adsl connection running from the modem to a speedtouch box which i turn has a telephone line connected to it via the type of connection that a phone has to the wall socket. Obviously the other end of this is connected to the wall socket along with my telephone.

As this is not a wireless connection i bought an LAN Wii adaptor to connect my Wii to the net but it is here that my problem lies.

Whenever i try to test the connection i get error message 51420. I have the LAN Adaptor connected to the Wii via the usb connection and it is then connected to my pc via the LAN adaptor. It is here that i believe the problem lies as would i be right in saying that haing botht the broadband and LAN adaptor connected to the pc via two connections will not work.

Do i need some sort of box into which i connect both the LAN adaptor and the broadband connection and then this one box is connected to the pc(a router i think its called) or is there a way to connect in the manner that i am already trying.

Help is greatly needed here peeps.

Hi

yes, your best bet would be to get a Wii compatible wireless router, but
seeing as you haven`t there are things you can do to try and get your current
connection working.

no, that`s not true.

basically, when you are connecting the Wii to a "host" pc (with internet connectivity)
what you are effectively doing is "sharing" the internet connection, pretty much like
windows own internet connection sharing (ICS).

what you will need to do is more than likely, run the windows ICS wizard and ensure
that the connection that *is* your internet connection (the USB one) is shared.
what "should" happen is the ethernet (LAN) adaptor in your PC will be allocated
and IP address by the wizard of 192.168.0.1 if memory serves me correctly, when
you then connect the Wii to the pc, the Wii (if set to obtain network settings
automatically) should now be able to obtain relevant IP info from the PC and you
should then be able to connect and update the Wii and consequently, download the
internet channel (opera).

if you have a look on google for WiiChat, there`s a dedicated forum for Wii owners.
there are a lot of questions about using the datel and nintendo`s LAN adaptors and
also ther wifi variants.

the bottom line is, for ease of set-up and convenience it`s best to get a compatible
router.

that means it`s disconnected.

are you using the correct cable as defined in the LAN adaptors instructions?

when using PC to PC ICS, you have to use a "crossover" cable rather than a
regular "patch" cable. this might be the problem?

failing that, try allocating the PC LAN adaptor with a "manual" IP address.
go into control panel>network connections then right click on the relevant
LAN adaptor and select "properties". on the general tab, scroll the list box
until you see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), select properties and put a tick
in the "use the following IP address". in here type 192.168.0.1 and
in the subnet box, type 255.255.255.0
the gateway (i think) needs to be the IP address of the USB connection
which is connected to the internet, as does the primary DNS server which
also needs to be entered manually.

on the Wii, you will need to go into the internet options and manually configure
the Wii`s IP address to 192.168.0.2, the subnet and default router / DNS
values should be the same as you entered into the PC.

oh, if you`re using any third party firewall software such as zone alarm, the firewall
LAN side protection needs to set to LOW or MEDIUM to allow ICS traffic. you may
also need to enter the Wii`s IP address into the "trusted" zone of your firewall.

Thanks again for the response, i have followed your detailed instructions but now am getting an instant error message on the Wii 50100.

To answer your first point my set up is as follows-

Phone Socket into which a phone style connection is entered, this runs into a speedtouch box which has another port for the small plastic adsl connection. The other end of the adsl is connected into the modem and the modem is connected to my pc via usb.

As for the Wii well thats connected to the LAN adaptor via usb, from the adaptor there is then an ethernet cable that connects to the LAN connection in the back of the pc(the cable was provided with the adaptor and both are the official nintendo products.

I have no real knowledge of the set up of these sorts of things and your advice thus far has been incredibly helpful. After following your last post the LAN connection is still disconnected, i have tried to bridge the connection but it says i need two LAN connections for this?

If the solution to this is a router box will any box work or do i need to be very specific in this matter, i have looked at boxes on ebay rather than highstreet stores purely because of the cost involved.

don`t worry...there are loads of people who have had issues getting
the Wii online.

i have a linksys WRT54GS router which will not let the Wii connect wirelessly
at all, so i have to use another router (WRT55AG) as a wireless access point
to allow internet connectivity.

if your after a router, obviously you`ll need an ADSL wireless modem/router
which will remove the need to have "two" boxes as per your current set-up.

the netgear range are very good and easy to set up. once again, head over
to WiiChat and have a look at the "routers" sticky in the Online forum.
there`s loads of replies saying which routers are suitable.

In case any more proof was need that i really have no clue when it comes to such things i am back for more advice.

I was given a free wireless router box by a friend and have tonight been attempting to connect my Wii to the net in order to spend my dust collecting Wii points. However unsurprisingly im really confused and getting nowhere.

The box has three ports on the back, an LAN one, a ADSL one and a USB one(although this isnt a USB port ala a pc as it is smaller and more adsl shaped), the problem arises when trying to figure out just how the hell this all goes together....if indeed it does at all.

To recap i have a connection running from my telephone wall socket, this runs via an extension cable across my living room and has a phone connection port at the end. Into this port i have a speedtouch box connected via a phone style connection, the speedtouc box is then connected to my modem via an adsl connection and the modem is connected to the pc via a usb cable. In the back of my pc i have one LAN port.

I also have the LAN adaptor for the Wii which has the ethernet cable that came with it. The adaptor connects to the Wii via USB but as for how i connect the rest up....well im stumped.

Please help

Hi

ok, try this.

first off, remove all traces of your current modem from your pc (drivers etc).

next, connect the ADSL port to a relevant microfilter.
then, connect your PC to the router via ethernet and LAN ports

now comes the tricky bit, you will need to configure the router to allow your
broadband to operate through it. you will (hopefully) have received a LAN IP
address from the router on your pc. click start>run then type cmd
into the run dialogue box. press enter. at the prompt, type ipconfig /all
to see your "new" LAN IP details...hopefully if the router is configured for DHCP
you should see IP / Default Gateway and DNS values.

the routers IP address will be the same as the Default Gateway value.

next, close the command prompt, and click on start>run, then type
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx is the same default gateway address)
and press enter, you should now see the routers web based config pages.
the only issue now is if the thing is password protected (you need to get this
info from your friend).

once inside the config pages, you will probably need to enter your ISP
supplied username and password in order for the router to authenticate
itself with your ISP....enter your details.
also, ensure that the Wii is broadcasting it`s wireless signal..preferably
802.11g (54Mbps) although if it`s only 802.11b (11Mbps) this will suffice
for internet browsing. click apply etc and restart the router.

test that it works by trying to access the internet on the connected PC.

go back into the configuration pages, and add some simple security.
to keep it simple and not block yourself access, simply (for now) assign the
router with a WPA-TKIP key (if is supports WPA) otherwise, create at least
a 128Bit WEP key. make a note of this key as you will need to enter it into
the Wii.

click apply etc for the changes to take place.

now to the Wii, go into the internet connections option (Wii options) and
search for a Wireless Access Point. hopefully, it should see your router.
click connect and you should now be prompted to enter the WEP (or WPA)
key that you created earlier.

that`s pretty much it really.

but remember, not all routers are compatible with the Wii.
