aparently vista is going to launch with Vista LIVE, & one of the main points of it is so that you can play opponents on both pc & 360, that should be cool :D

We have Vista running at work on a demo machine.
The machine is a P4 2.8Ghz (HT), with 1 GB of RAM, albeit with a crappy gfx card (32Mb Matrox dual head)....all I can say is...it struggles.

It also doesn`t appear that different from XP...perhaps this is because I`m not seeing the "Aero" interface, but I wouldn`t jump at the chance to install it.

However, the ability to play across platforms is a great idea..even though the XBOX360 is essentially a PC anyway :D

we`ve got a spare pc we put it on, and even using the "Intel Extreme" it does Aero OK.

Seems OK, to me though it looks like you can customise the desktop the same way you would X-Windows! Not had chance to play much though.

As for the games side, Crysis apparently has some cool funky DX10 stuff which at the mo M$ say will only work under Vista, but I`m guessing it will be a whiel before games are Vista only.

Can`t imagine EA wanting to lose all that money by telling ppl they have to upgrade OS to play Sims 3 ;)

Halo 2 is Vista only, but I doubt you care that much about that! I mean wow, great I can spend a grand to play an XBox game from a few years ago!

Thats one of the main reasons that it wont happen. It is already possible, apparently, and they seriously considered it for Q4, but ultimately decided that it wasnt a level playing field so canned any idea. It is also the reason that there isnt keyboard/mouse support in 360 FPS games, despite the connections being USB, because KB/M players would be at a huge advantage and it takes the 360 away from what they want it to be.

This does seem a bit of a stretch, though as players using the DOA4 arcade stick are already cleaning up on SFII, because the standard pad isnt all that great for dragon punching madness.

And, yeah, the fact that Halo2 is only playable on Vista is pretty laughable. You can pick up Halo2 and an XBox for the price of a stick of RAM at the moment. God knows how cheap youll be able to pick them up when Vista finally comes out.

After Christmas.

You can (or at least you could) get legit beta test versions for M$ themselves.

I noticed today that Dell say "Vista compatable" on some of their machines.

I read somewhere that many PC vendors are annoyed it won`t laucnh till the new year, cos it will hard their pre Christmas PC sales.

I have Knoppix as well. And its fine for non-techies providing everything works (ie network connections etc.)
As soon as you have to start configuring your network connection then M$ wins on the ease of use (or perhaps its familiarity) front.

Most of the people using computers around the world are not really computer literate (in that they wouldn`t have a clue what to do if something goes wrong)...therefore, a `simple` OS (like WinXP) where it does everything for you is what will come out as the preferred choice. Stuff like the rollback of dodgy installations/drivers etc.

Don`t get me wrong, I`m not in bed with M$... but I`m simply using the mainstream products and also testing the not so mainstream ones.
