Slight problem with the ol` Dreamcast.

Matthew Smart (Reviewer) posted this on Saturday, 29th April 2006, 16:28

The last few times have I`ve had a spin on the DC, now and again it resets itself back to the logo screen mid-game. Sometimes it`ll boot the game back up straight away; Other times, it`ll reset itself a few times in a row, then fire her up.

At first I thought it was a power problem, but the orange light on the case never goes out. I`ve got no Idea, and i`m not adverse to opening her up - but I`d like to know what i`m looking for.

Any ideas?

It`s nothing to worry about. Go here for a decent fix:

It`s quite a common thing with the beloved console apparently. I`ve never experienced it with mine, but let me know how you get on. Hope it helps.

Yup, now my DC is dead... :(

I followed the guide to a T, sorted it back uo, and as I switched it on, the light came on for a second then went out.

Now all I`m getting is a low hum. SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETE!!!!!!

Oh Christ you`re kidding me? Are you sure you put everything back together correctly? I`d check again before going on eBay, I really would. Sorry the guide didn`t help, but it was definitely a fault I read about many a time, and was very common. I felt sure it would solve it.

You`ll have to do what I`m going to do. Buy one of those Treamcast thingies from somewhere. My DC`s OK at the mo, but you never know what`ll happen to such an old system, so I`m getting a backup system.

I don`t know where from though!

It appears it`s a common fault among old Dreamcasts, you pull them apart for a fix, put them back together and they die. Or so the internet says.

A sign of old age I believe. This was my second console (after foolishly selling my first one), bought used, and she had all the signs of being an old bint. God bless her soul.

Not to tarnish her memory, but I`ve won another one cheaply on eBay.

Cheers for the guide, though. It`s a shame she went and died on me, but that`s how it goes. :)

Oooh show us a link. Is it a good one? I`ve thought about buying a backup for a while because mine still gets a lot of use. It`s been fine for the most part (touch wood) but y`know it`s a worry isn`t it?

I reckon those smashing knockoff hardware makers in Hong Kong should go about faking the regular model (without the LCD screen) just for us sad fans. I mean, it`s not like Sega are going to re-release it is it? A lot of people thought the Treamcast was a bad thing but I reckon it keeps the system alive. Apparently "Treamcast" is short for "travel Dreamcast". There you go!

What are you playing on the DC at the moment (or in Matthews case, what were you planning on playing) ?

Well into Ikaruga at the moment, never played it first time round. My loss, its brilliant.

Heh heh, I was having a blast on UFC, Re-Volt and Soul Calibur. I actually just bought Sonic adventure, Sega Rally 2 and Toy Commander on Saturday afternoon (eBay), so I wasn`t too impressed when my DC kicked the bucket.

I`m actually just away to list it in a local free-ads paper as a spares or repair, so I`ll be chomping at the bit until the new one arrives!

For myself I`m currently taking on a load of Capcom 2D fighters - Super Streetfighter 2 X, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and Capcom Vs SNK 2. Not to mention Streetfighter Alpha 3 and Streetfighter III Third Strike. Phew!

Next on my list is Jet Set Radio. I`d really like to finish that. And I`m planning another return journey to Dobuita and Aberdeen Harbour soon....

Just as well I`m selling all my Gamecube stuff off I suppose. Loads on DC to keep me going well up to any potential future console purchase.
