XBox video connections...

julianf (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 23rd November 2003, 12:06

Hi all, I`ve got a bog-standard Xbox that comes with the bog-standard console-to-TV connector that plugs into the video/mono/stereo yellow/white/red phono sockets on the TV.

It also comes with a scart adapter which I presume purely allows you to connect it around the back out of the way instead of on the front panel.

My question is this...Sound aside (because I`ll probably end up getting the advanced scart lead for 5.1) - Is it worth getting a proper console-to-RGBscart connector? Is the picture quality that different?

Yes, RGB gets rid of the "fuzzy" effect that is evident when using the bog standard
composite cable. Especially noticeable if there is a lot of red in the scene.

p.s. the official Xbox RGB lead is a bit on the flimsy side, my plastic casing came
away from the connector very early on.

Thanks so far guys...couple more questions...

As my Xbox isn`t going to be a `fixture` in the living room (too much connected up already) and will be used on more than one TV in the house it would be easier for me to just use AV video connections from the front of the TVs. Dixons do a MadCatz S-AV cable which has the yellow/red/white phono connectors AND an S-Video connector...

So...

1) Is S-Video as good as RGB (or at least better than just AV connections)?
2) Does anyone know of an Advanced-Scart type connector with S-Video AND an optical 5.1 output for when I use the Xbox on my main TV & Home Cinema set-up?

Rik/Gerald - would the item you guys talk about on the thread below do the trick for question 2?

Hi Julian, looks like you had the same problem as me, want the Dolby Digital but the best your telly will take is S-video.

I searched all over for a cable that would do it back last year and ended up getting one from amazon, they don`t have the one I bought anymore but this one is just like it if not slightly better.

The one you have found looks like the same one, but make sure the optical lead is included as in the description it just says optical out.

** Update **

Just found this one at play, looks like the same one again but it is £3 cheaper, free delivery and it is in stock :D

All the best

Ger.

Top stuff - thanks Ger.

The one at Whitedog DOES have the optical lead with it but is £15 plus £2.78 pp - although it has gold connections which it doesn`t look like the Play one has...are gold connections worth the extra £4.80?

EDIT: Oh, hang on - I won`t be using the gold connections if I`m only using the S-Video and the Optical cable will I?
