Enter the Matrix - worth buying, or only renting?

RWB (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 7th June 2003, 22:49

£29.99 at the mo on Play for Xbox, received *** in Xbox Gamer...said to be flawed yet enjoyable. I *love* the first film, like the second one - so what do I do? Gamer quandry here folks! :)

My local Blockbuster do have a rental copy, so should I try before buying? What is the general consensus on the game as a whole?

Avoid. Stay Away. Steer clear at all costs

One of the worst games in years (yes, worse than Vice City) - bugged, flawed, illogical, terrible controls, laughable graphics, too easy.

If you`re thinking of getting it to understand more about the last film then don`t bother, you`ve not missed much. Just go to gamefaqs.com and read it from there.

Shameful game - an insult to the real games out there ie Ikaruga, Monkey Ball, Zelda. Final Fantasy, Panzer Dragoon et al

I would say rent it. I personally like the game and bought it. I have played it through twice with each character and I still find it fun. I say rent because there are some good games coming out on the 20th which are more worth your dosh and the game is quite short so you probably could complete it in a rental period.

"(yes, worse than Vice City)"
Already you`ve made us realise your views stand for nothing; Vice City is a brilliant game.

Anyway, I completed the PC version with Niobe last night and in my opinion you should rent first to see if you like it. It has some great moments in it, but you`re feeling there`s lots of missed opportunities. The game is worth playing through alone just to see the film from another point of view. There`s some really good cut-scenes (like Niobe snogging Persephone) and some levels are particularly good.

The game can get a little boring towards the end as the final levels go on for far too long - but there are some nice touches. If I were you, when you play it I`d go for the Niobe as the character to play first, as she has a far more integral role to the film. The game does try to mix it up with a few driving levels, and a bit of flying around in the hovercraft, but frankly they`re pathetic and really not worth having in the game.

Also you`ll get to see the new Oracle in it as well, who does look very different (but they get around it quite well). So anyway, like I said, probably best to rent to see if you like it first. You`ve gotta be Matrix fan to appreciate really.

By brilliant, do you mean bugged and unfinished? Oh, I forgot about pointless and unnecessarily violent. Yes, what a cracking game it was...kill innocent people and commit crimes to make money.

Who needs games like Metroid Prime or Castlevania: Aria Of Sorrow when we have gems like Vice City being rehashed and recycled every year?

No I don`t mean bugged and unfinished. Sorry Richard you`re obviously playing a different game.

"Pointless and unnecassirly(sic) violent"
Well Richard you can`t tell me you didn`t know the game was like this; what planet are you living on? Its no worse than any film I`ve ever seen. I mean there`s more violence in The Itchy and Scratchy show for example.

Also, GTA3 has only been "rehashed and recycled" once I hasten to add, which most definitely isn`t "every year".

The game I played was bugged and obviously rushed. And I know a lot of people who said very similar things: Cars falling through the floor, people walking into walls and fire, plus the game crashed on at least 5 seperate occasions. I played the game through until the asset missions btw, so I did experience at least 2/3 of the game.

Yes, I knew it was violent - that didn`t bother me. I`m mature enough to know it`s only a game. Other people aren`t though - do you really think all those 14/15 year olds who have the game understood the violence? I certainly don`t

I bought it because I wanted to play in a `virtual city` as it was touted. I thought it would be good but it turned out to be crap IMO. Simple as that. At the very least, it`s the worst game I`ve bought in years

`Also, GTA3 has only been "rehashed and recycled" once I hasten to add, which most definitely isn`t "every year".`

There is a sequel to VC in production, a new game (San Andreas I think?) AND GTA4 in production. Plus a new game which is to be a launch title for the next consoles. Oh and GC/Xbox ports of VC this Christmas. Not recycled then? It sure looks like it to me. They might as well just stick a `The Sims` logo on the box.

It`s my opinion that it`s a crap game. If you don`t agree, then fine. I`m not childish enough to argue over a game (and I`m sure you don`t want to either). Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Richard_lench, just out of curiosity, what platform did you buy VC for?

For Enter The Matrix, I thought it was ok. A lot of fun to play, and there are no irritating things in it.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong it is ;-)

Having completed the game I didn`t suffer any of the problems that you raised. I see your point about the violence in the game though, but if people have problems detaching themselves from the virtual reality worlds in computer games then surely we should be questioning the mentality of these people? Like I said, there are film and television programs just as violent as this game, which 14/15 year olds watch everyday. Certainly some games should be censored, but I do not feel this is one of them.

It was one of the only games I`ve ever played right through, though it seems nothing said will persuade you otherwise. Though for you to claim it is the "worst game I`ve bought in years" then I`m sorry but I can`t accept that - you must be playing some very brilliant games. It`s a shame you didn`t get the experience from it that so many other people have.
