could anybody tell me if the xbox plays audio cd copies, and if so does it do the xbox any harm?

It doesn`t play CD-Rs as the disc drive doesn`t read them. It will play CD-RWs. And the only way they`ll harm the machine if you tape razor blades to the discs. They`re perfectly safe.

You would need a chip and a second drive if you want to play audio CDr copys.
