DVD`s in Dolby Digital on PS2

GJD (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 4th July 2002, 14:34

Hi

I`m about to buy a new TV with integrated Dolby Digital (Philips 32PW9617) but I gather the Dolby 5.1 input is coax and the PS2 output is optical. Maplin have a convertor that claims to switch from one to the other but has anyone tried to do this and got it working? Stupid question, but I wonder how could I tell if it was working OK anyway (as opposed to just outputting in Dolby Prologic, which I guess it would do via S-Video without the optical connection)..

Or would you guys just not bother and buy a matching Philips DVD Player (standard coax optical audio out) instead?

Greg

be careful with the intergrated DD tvs, because the audio output is often quite low. ive a feeling that philips tv may only have a total output of 50w.

I have the 9616 and the RMS is 110w

also to get dolby digital you must connect to Scart 1, as this has the option EXT1+Dolby Digital option, the other 3 scarts dont.

The sound is very good. Very good indeed.

Thanks Guys

Ironduke.. assuming you`re using a PS2 for DVD`s do you not get greenscreen on your DVD`s by having to connect via SCART? I use S-video currently which works fine (sounds like I`ll have to switch to SCART get 5.1 via the Philips set). Have you had to use an optical to coax converter to get the sound sorted?

no I dont use my PS2 for DVD movies, although I have done with another TV, I have a blaze scart which has a switch on it to move between RGB and standard AV, but thats not important now as I have had my PS2 chipped and the RGB green screen removed.

I cant understand why sony didnt include a coaxial output in the back as well.

I got a coax to optical converter from Maplin to connect my Philips DVD622 to a Yamaha VS-10 about a 6 months ago. I`ve had no problems, it detects pro logic, DD 5.1 and DTS signals no prob. I assume the optical to coax would work equally well. Only problem is hiding the small box and that it takes up another socket.
