Anyone seen Martyrs?

Ben Franklin (Reviewer) posted this on Wednesday, 15th April 2009, 18:47

Watched this much talked about French film last night. Was very shocking and unsettling, but well made and intriguing at the same time. I don`t want to give too much away, but if you`re a horror fan it`s a must see. That said, it`s one of the most horrific films I`ve ever seen, and should be approached with caution. Apparently viewers at Fright Fest were sick in the aisles...

Optimum sent me the BD a couple of weeks ago (along with The Wrestler), but I haven`t had time to watch it what with ploughing through the X-Men boxed set. Will give it a go at some point though.

Well don`t watch it near the squeamish or easily disturbed. In fact, I don`t think there`s anybody who won`t be disturbed by it. Let me know what you think!

I`ve asked Optimum for the BD but nothing has come as yet. Quite looking forward to seeing it as well, more`s the pity.

I need to wait until the Mrs is out as she`s scared of Labyrinth, so Christ knows what this would do to her.

I found the first 20-25 minutes disturbing but the rest was so OTT that it sort of went beyond shocking to where my reaction was just "Eeeew!" a bit.

I`ve been on a bit of a "OMG that`s nasty!" horror kick lately. "Inside" was probably the nastiest (but was good), and I found "Mum and Dad" *really* uncomfortable to watch. I also saw "Frontiers" (which reminded me of "Calvaire") but I didn`t really connect with any of the characters, I dunno if that`s the fault of the film or if I`m just heartless/desensitised. :D

I really liked this, and while it was very OTT, the last few minutes will actually stay with you for a long time. I found myself thinking about it, and the pity for what they went through just rose to the surface.

Would recommend it to anyone, although I hear that the yanks are now looking at a remake, although there is no chance that they touch the SPOILER:
skinning the girl alive scene

Yeah, Guinea Pig Movies are just grim.

The Flower of Flesh and Blood, is a particularly nasty little short movie that had me heaving when SPOILER:
he cut out the eye and licked the blood and gunge off of it :(

Rumour has it, back in the 80`s Charlie Sheen got his hands on this movie and sent it to the FBI believing it was a snuff movie. Some parts look tame now, but the whole thing is pretty horrific

I`m a bit like xfg as I`ve been watching and reviewing horror films for years so things that used to make me jump or think "wow, that`s nasty" don`t seem to have the same effect any more. I guess I`m just becoming desensitised though there are the occasional moments that make my stomach do something I didn`t ask it to - the bolt-cutters on the achilles tendons in Frontier(s) comes to mind but I imagine I`d have had a more extreme reaction had I seen it a decade ago - a similar scene but involving a knife in Sympathy For Mr Vengeance really had me squirming when I first saw it but when I watched the film recently there was little reaction.

Some of the gorier films are so OTT that they are unbelievable so have the opposite effect as the violence becomes almost cartoon-like and unintentionally amusing - I chuckled in some scenes of gratuitous violence in the Hostel and Saw films.

Anyway, back on topic, a copy of Martyrs should be on its way and a review will be up in due course so you can see what I think then!
