Apocalypse Now: Redux

Brian Elliott (Reviewer) posted this on Thursday, 24th January 2002, 00:45

Hey guys

The basic question behind this post is: is "Redux" actually worth it ?

I`ve just watched the regular version for the first time (criminal, I know...) with the excellent Hearts of Darkness documentary. I keep reading different reviews as to whether the new DVD is worth it or not, considering the lack of extras & the idea that the 49 minutes extra should maybe have stayed on the cutting room floor.

And that`s not to mention Francis Ford Crazy-Man considering yet another cut, rumoured to last 250 minutes !!

Anyone any comments, or should I save valuable time & get it now ? :)

I posted a thread about this a while back....I`m just concerned if stump up the cash for Redux that a year down the line they will release an Apocalypse Now: Redux Special Edition and then Apocalypse Now Redux : No Honest Guv This Really Is The Last Edition.

I hope Coppola isn`t gonna start treating his film like George Lucas`s yearly fleecing of the kids by releasing Star Wars on video with Extra bells and whistles on.

Hey guys

Is there anyone who actually owns this disc, who thinks it`s not worth it at all ?

I got this disc at Xmas, and I`d say that it`s well worth getting. If you`re a fan of the film, you`re pretty likely to get on well with this disc. The extra footage - particularly the "French Plantation" stuff - works really well, and I honestly think it makes it a better film. Definitely recommended for fans of the earlier version of the film.
OK, so there are no real extras to speak of (just a trailer, I think), but it`s still pretty good value. I suppose all the effort by Coppola, Murch etc. went into putting new stuff into the actual film instead of making extras to put on the disc, so it`s understandable.
Anyway, definitely worth your £16.99 (or whatever it`s currently going for...)
