Robocop DVD?

JamieM (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 5th January 2002, 15:04

Can someone please fill me in on a nugget of info? I am of course aware that there is the Rococop trilogy box set being releeased in Feb, but am unsure of what the single DVD of Robocop (1) has in terms of special features. Am I correct in thinking the R1 version they currently have for sale on Play247 has no special features on it (or very few), but there is soon to be a NEW special edition of Robocop released? Will this have MORE features than the February 2002 edition of Robocop found in the 3 DVD box set, or be the same DVD?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

I`m sure I read that a new region 1 version will soon be out. Probably fully loaded with extras and hopefully a DTS soundtrack.

If MGM do release Robocop on its own it would make sense not to add loads more features over the trilogy film to annoy us (Terminator anyone?), so I hope this isn`t the case. Ideally Robocop would be the same film with the same features.

As for DTS, well the film never had a DTS soundtrack in the first place (just Dolby Stereo) so a 5.1 remix would have to be created from the existing sound elements and this takes time and money to do. I can`t see this happening.

Let`s just hope for a good R1/R2 film in the first place.

Hope this Helps

Am I correct in thinking that the UK release of Robocop was edited by the BBFC to remove some more violent scenes from the film? If so does this mean that the re-release would be subject to the same?

the trilogy robocop set due in Feb 2002 will have the first uncut version oof robocop since the criterion edition, it will also have a DD5.1 s/t and a much improved picture. it will not be available separately but at £28.00 for the trilogy who cares.

Robocop was edited by the MPAA in the U.S before it even got to the U.K, but the new R2 release in february has all of the previously cut footage on the disc (if you choose the directors cut version). I wouldn`t get too excited just yet though because the disc authors have used intergrated branching to get both versions on the DVD (not seamless branching) and this may trigger a lengthy pause on some players (probably even longer than a layer change). I`d wait and see if this was the case before parting with money because the eventual R1 box-set will most likely have proper branching (like T2 has) or may even just have the uncut version on its own. The new stand-alone cheapie (R1) of Robocop has a waffly compressed-sounding soundtrack, so I`d avoid that too!.

Thanks for all your help guys. So it sounds like I`ll be ordering my copy of the Robocop Trilogy from Play247 when it comes out in Feb, if its going to include all the cut material, great sound and picture etc you have said. It`s the extras I`m after, and if it`ll have them, I`ll buy all three in this pack (even though my personal opinion is that the 3rd is laughably bad) :-)

Thanks again.
