RCE COMPATIBLE?

Paul Franco (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 3rd January 2002, 12:55

I have been offered a software update to my DVD player to render it multi-region. I am told this will be non-RCE compatible. Can you please tell me how widespread the RCE code is or is likely to become.

Also, does this mean that I will not even be able to play RCE encoded discs bought from my own region?

Please help!

As far as I`m aware it`s being used by Warner & Columbia on their disks.

Since these are 2 major movie producers I would think there`s a good chance that some movies you want will be unplayable on your player.

You may also find that even disks from your own region using RCE will be unplayable. One way to play other disks is to make your player "region free" as opposed to "multi region". RCE is designed to stop disks playing on "region free" players.

A multi region player becomes the appropriate region and as a result RCE doesn`t matter since for all intents and purposes your player IS from that region.

I`d go for a multi region - I got mine from Techtronics too! Panasonic A350 - it`s a bit of a dinosaur these days, but it`ll play anything you put in it :)

Paul, RCE seems to be spreading. Two titles I have are Knights Tale R1 and 6th Day R1. I also think the Patriot R1 is RCE.

If you look at Play 247 it clearly states which R1 discs are RCE.

I recomend a look at www.techtronics.com as it has a good description of RCE and what it does. They also modify players.

As far as I recall you need to be able to set your player to R1. This may be manual or automatic dependant on the model. My Sony 735 came from Hi Spek but luckily has a techtronics mod. I discovered this when I bought back the 6th day from the US and it wouldnt play. SO I searched techtronics (with jet lag) and found their pdf manual for the mod. Keyed in the commands and away it went (result!).

So if the software upgrade is free, do it. Otherwise dont waste your cash.

Rumours are that AI R1 will be RCE.
